Total War: Warhammer prematurely announced

Grumpy cat out of the bag

Total War is an epic franchise. Right? I mean, massive war strategy. The only thing with more testosterone is a steak and an erection. Yes, that was a Denis Leary reference. But Total War is getting even more over the top thanks to an all new Warhammer iteration.

Over on the Total War forums, a user received an advanced copy of the art book for Total War. In it, Creative Assembly talk about their future and plans for upcoming installments. This includes “taking the series to a fantasy setting with Total War: WARHAMMER”. That’s right, Total War is getting the Warhammer treatment.

Obviously it hasn’t been officially announced yet, so there are basically no details about the game, but it certainly does sound like an amazing idea. Warhammer fans would jump at the chance to play a properly realized game based on their favorite figurines. Just imagine a campaign centered around the Empire with factions including Bretonnians, Wood Elves, Undead, Dwarfs, Orcs and Chaos. The world of Warhammer is massive and offers plenty of lore and inspiration – Total War could really go mad with this franchise.

Of course, one of the main things that people like about building Warhammer models is making them their own with unique paint jobs, emblems and other customization. I wonder if Total War will allow players that level of control over their armies. It would certainly make the game a much deeper experience and make the game feel distincly Warhammer.

Is this the game you’ve been waiting for? Will this reignite your love of Warhammer or Total War, or do both of them fail to grab your attention?

Considering the agony a misplaced paint stroke could cause, pain job sounds about right to me. 😉

Thankfully it’s acrylic paint so it’s fairly easy to fix. Just wish I had more time to paint.

Well, how about we support the Warhammer one so they know that making a W:40K is a great idea?

Also, Orks can be long range! I actually built and ran an entirely defensive ranged Ork list for table top, and won many games because people assumed I would rush up to attack them – so they stayed back, and I just pelted them with Supa Kannons and Shokk Attack Guns ;D

I think it can work, especially if one focusses on Guard battles.

(Assuming you’re replying to me here :P)

I still disagree, I’m afraid. The guard don’t keep formations when in combat (unless you create your own fluffy regiment that does) outside of manning defensive structures – and when on offense are generally encouraged to swarm into enemy gunfire chaotically.

Tank formations are a different matter, of course – though that’s a small gear in a massive machine.

And, ultimately, as great as it would be to have a new game focus primarily on IG vs IG combat, that’s not what most people find interesting unfortunately.

I’m happy for Total War to do the Fantasy games, and I’ll just hope for Relic to put out Dawn of War 3 😀

            DoW 3 would be lovely.

But to your point I say this: would it not be possible to adapt the Total War engine to support the more chaotic nature of 40K battles? If so, don’t you think that kind of scale would better represent a 40K battle?

          • Daniel Hallinan

            January 14, 2015 at 11:00

Well, if you need to adapt the engine for gameplay mechanics that run counter to what the engine focus on already, then why are you using that engine in the first place?

The only thing that the Total War engine that really provides that’s attractive to 40k is scale – but it would be *considerably* easier to use another engine that fits the chaotic nature more closely and just ensure the scale aspect is in place.

            January 14, 2015 at 11:04

Valid point. Not sure how considerably easier it would be to create an engine from scratch. If there’s another RTS one that can both be adapted, and fits the W:40K format, then your point stands, but none come to mind.

Still, one can dream, and in the mean-time we can take solace in the Warhammer Total War. 🙂

            January 14, 2015 at 11:11

Ah, I didn’t mean creating one from scratch – rather using one that’s already closer to the ideal.

Personally, I feel that the Company of Heroes engine fits what 40k wants much more cloesly. We saw that a bit in DoW2 (though that had a polarizing reception), but I’d LOVE to see a new 40k game that sticks closely to the engine used for Company of Heroes 2 😀

I’ve never played CoH or the sequel. It’s historical, so I’ve no interest, but I’ll go look at some gameplay vids now. 🙂

Interestingly, 40k wouldn’t really ever gel in a Total War system. It’s too rigid, when 40k tends to rely on more fluid and chaotic combat.

That said, it DOES fit how Fantasy works pretty damned well.

I still own that – it wasn’t bad, but not the epic we’d been waiting for. There was a game breaking bug during the chaos campaign before it was patched, as such I never finished it.

This is pretty fantastic – and surprising as well as when the company gained the Warhammer Fantasy licence, this was the dream game people were hoping for – so it’s amazing to see it actually happen.

I’ll be interested to see what factions they put in, from the current total of 15. I know there are some rumours that current events in the tabletop fiction may see some factions merge, and I wonder if the game will represent that.

I’d be very keen to play it Total War style. While I’ve not been a fan of the other titles in the series – that’s more due to me not enjoying historical-type games than it is an issue with the Total War system.

2 is sort of ok, now that some patches have made so that turn 2 in the game is not 30 seconds plus. That was pathetic, on release.

1 and 2 are the same concept yet totally different games. Will play 2 more and perhaps will enjoy it like 1
