Toxic players a good sign for a game

Orcs must die unchained

We have all ranted and raved about toxic players in games. You know the ones – those guys who take the whole too far and tell everyone else that they don’t know what they’re doing. League of Legends and Dota 2 are using all sorts of tools to reform those players, but Orcs Must Die! Unchained has a unique perspective.

While Orcs Must Die! Unchained is a multiplayer game, played in an arena, they don’t want to be compared to the other Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games. Robot Entertainment designer Jerome K. Jones pointed out in an interview with Polygon has a dual nature so some players can take an aggressive offensive role while others can focus on defense and making crazy traps for the other team. He also has a unique take on the toxicity in games:

There’s probably something good about the toxic players showing up and sticking with your game. The good thing is probably that it’s a good game. It’s holding their interest, it’s keeping them around. It’s making them passionate enough to give a damn.

[…] You need those people there. They’re driving the game. They’re giving it longevity. They’re giving it passion. And when they find something about your game that they love, they defend it to the death. Those are the same people that can go to bat for you.

He does make an interesting point. Those same people who shout that no one knows Dota and we’re all a bunch of idiots are probably the ones who helped fund the Compendium to the level it has reached. Those die hard fans of a game are the ones who come out to defend it when the rest of us might call them toxic or unwelcoming of new players. That said, I’m glad to see that Robot Entertainment will also be working hard to ensure that all gamers are welcomed in their non-MOBA – they want players to be passionate, but not cause other players to avoid the game due to their inappropriate behavior. Hmm, sounds like they’re trying to get the best of both worlds here, I wonder if they can pull it off.

I knew about 1 and 2 but this seems to be a 3rd game.

1 was fun but 2 relies too heavily on the use of your weapon.

I can and will never condone toxic behaviour. Its one thing to be passionate about a game but to throw insults and abuse other players. Yeah, scum like that can eat dirt

How to Ward against Toxic Players..
Option A: Teamkill their asses if possible,
Option B: Tell them politely to get fucked.
Option C: All of the above

You can be a fan without being toxic, especially if you’re someone that’s played the game for a long time – because then you’re harming the game you profess to love by being a dickhead to new players.

This is something that seems to be more restricted to competitive online games though, co-op games don’t really suffer as much from it in my limited experience. I’ve had a pretty good experience with much higher level players in Warframe.

Same here, and that includes Planetside 2 as well.

The one guy actually made a point of pulling me back to him when I tried to run around without pants on until I got it through my thick skull that it was a bad idea to do that.

I use the DayZ method of dealing with toxic players. Cuff em and force feed them rotten bananas.

Or break their legs in town (newest patch sorta screws with that plan)

Or just shoot them in the face. (lowest satisfaction)

Next patch hopefully should have the new pathing mesh in so I would say fix incoming to stable 2-3 weeks.

cool will update and then play again.. I heard they gonna redo it all on a new engine that just myth..

Not a myth but rather a error in presentation. RV2.5 has been modded so much that it is no longer RV2.5.Once they replace the rendering part of the engine it will be called enfusion or infusion or whatever. But the changes they have made so far is impressive. Can’t wait for vehicles.

Maybe that’s why people are looking forward to Destiny. When you play against people it’s not fun loosing because there could be reasons like pay to win,or exploits, or hacks or maybe they’ve played the game way more longer than you and let’s be honest any game that claims they have a perfect matchmaking system is bullshit, especially when there aren’t enough players.

But playing together against the CPU removes all the above variables except toxic players.

Maybe back in vanilla or TBC but the last three or so expansions pretty much wet nurses you through getting legendary gear. One of the reasons why I stopped a long time ago.

I remember playing for 2 weeks on my alt to reach lvl 60 on vanilla. Now you can hit max level in 2 days (4 if you have a job) and if that is not enough you can just pay to auto level.

Game has been dumbed down although I do miss it every now and then.

The great PVE vs PVP debate. I myself prefer PVE but then again sometimes you just need to get your frustrations out on other humans. 😛
