Tropico 5 banned in Thailand due to potential risks

This could be us but you banning

Countries around the world have different views on what content is safe. The sort of games that receive a ban are traditionally violent or sexual in nature. Thailand is more strict on the latter, but has now gone on to ban Tropico 5, a city simulator game.

It seems like a rather harmless thing to deny the country, but the reasoning is that Tropico is seen as a risk to national security. New Era Thailand marketing manager Nonglak Sahavattanapong had this to say (via The Big Story)

The film and video censorship office blocked sales of ‘Tropico 5’ because they feared some part of its content might affect peace and order in the country.

Tropico is a series which not only allows you to run your own country, but also gives you the power of choosing how you will rule it. Will you be the democratic kind, giving power to the people, or will you rule with an iron fist? It’s something that Thailand censors don’t seem to be too keen on. I wonder why?

Previous instalments of the game have actually been allowed in the past, but that was before Thailand went under military dictatorship (which started on the 22nd of May).

Actually it’s a good game with positive reviews. We’ve had licenses to distribute Tropico 3 and 4 before, but in the fifth installment, the story line has developed further and there might be some part of it that’s not appropriate in the current situation in Thailand

There are no plans to appeal the decision. I have friends in Thailand at the moment who are teaching English. I guess they will just have to wait to get back home before they can plan and run their own country.

I do love to run a banana (not Jim) republic in tropico. Maybe I should get my old copy again and start a new campaign.

If it was a Banana Jim Republic thing would work as usual, only the dictator would drop lengthy comments now and then before disappearing for days on end.

Does that mean we’ve been wrong all along? It’s not the Banana has spoken, it’s the Banana’s cats have spoken.

That actually sounds like it could be a pretty effective form of governance.

Thailand should just ban earthquakes and tsunami’s if they want peace and order in the country.
