Twitch, for those who don’t know, is an awesome streaming service. You can watch people play professional Dota 2, or kick around their Minecraft servers. There is a huge variety of streams, and the service preparing to expand.

Twitch is currently reaching more that 45 million unique visitors per month. That is huge. And it’s only going to grow – twitch will be integrated in the PS4 and Xbox One, exposing a whole new range of people to its treasures. This also means that more people will be uploading their awesome videos and streams to twitch. Yay! I can’t wait to watch more people feeding in LoL.

It’s interesting how many companies are investing in twitch now. The focus of this investment is on internal ad sales. I’m curious to see if we start seeing more ads pop up on twitch, or how they will take advantage of the enormous viewership. Regardless, it’s great to see twitch’s commitment to growth:

Gamers today have a healthy appetite for both producing and consuming live video game content, so it’s vital that we’re not only keeping pace with them, but staying one step ahead,” said Twitch COO Kevin Lin. “With the investments from Thrive Capital, WestSummit Capital, and Take-Two Interactive, it ensures we can more effectively grow and tap into new markets.

It appears that we have gotten past some barriers to entry and hurdles for viewers – video game-based content is growing in the entertainment sector. Plus, twitch is ideal of the younger generation who are used to viewing content on their own terms, ala Netflix. If someone wants to binge on Dota 2, they can watch as many hours of it as they’d like thanks to twitch. I just wish their speeds were a bit better for us here in South Africa – I often struggle with lag on twitch more than other streaming networks. Local server, please?
