Twitch may have been hacked

Twitch

Twitch is the go-to service for streaming video game content – and for watching live-streamed video content. It’s also the place you should go to right now, to change your passwords. Twitch has confirmed that there’s been a bit of unauthorised access, and you’ll need to reset a number of things.

Here’s what The Twitch Team says on its blog:

We are writing to let you know that there may have been unauthorized access to some of your Twitch user account information, including possibly your Twitch username and associated email address, your password, the last IP address you logged in from, limited credit card information (card type, truncated card number and expiration date), and any of the following if you provided it to us: first and last name, phone number, address, and date of birth. PLEASE NOTE: Twitch does not store or process full credit or debit card information, so your card number is safe.

While we store passwords in a cryptographically protected form, we believe it’s possible that your password could have been captured in clear text by malicious code when you logged into our site on March 3rd. For your protection, we have expired your password and stream keys. In addition, if you had connected your account to Twitter or YouTube, we have terminated this connection.

You will be prompted to create a new password the next time you attempt to log into your Twitch account.

If you log in to Twitch using other services like YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, you’ll need to re-authenticate, and probably change your password at those services if they’re in any way similar, which they shouldn’t be if you’re at all concerned with internet privacy.

If applicable, you will also need to re-connect your account to Twitter and YouTube, and re-authenticate through Facebook, once you change your password. We also recommend that you change your password at any other website where you use the same or a similar password. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Bloody hackers.

This is why I started to use different passwords for each place. Google, god bless their souls, twice blocked someone from accessing my gmail account using the correct password, once from China and once from Canada. Only explanation I have is old sites getting hacked where I might’ve made accounts in my early days on the internet. Idiot that I was, I used the same password in several places back then 😛

I must say Google also managed to block a couple of other people from accessing my email.

XD I must admit, I’m a bit curious as to what kind of mass emails he/she would’ve sent everyone in my address book

I used to do that…until I had an excel spreadsheet with 50 different passwords. So now I use about 5 different passwords. I also use double verification on google.

I use Keepass. I don’t even know what most of my passwords are, I just use it to create random stuff.

Another reason to NOT store credit card information on the internet.
I’ll happily just form in the forms everything and not save them on a site.

That is why I told my bank off when they asked whether they should increase my credit card limit. I keep it at 250 bucks exactly so that I don’t have to sweat about worry about online payments. Not sure why I bother though: I’m sure amazon, steam and gog are perfectly safe 😛
