Good work Twitch!

Twitch announced today that Twitch Interactive Inc. will replace Justin.tv as the company’s parent name. Justin.tv will still be a separate product of Twitch interactive. The name change comes after Twitch’s impressive growth which I reported on yesterday.

They have over one million active broadcasters and an average of 13 billion minutes of watch time per month. The most watched games are (unsurprisingly) League of Legends, DOTA 2 and StarCraft 2. Compared to 2012, LoL saw an increase of 258% in viewing time in 2013 while DOTA 2 saw an increase of 508%. Founder of Twitch Emmett Shear had this to say about Twitch’s success:

“As Twitch has continued to grow as the leader of the video game streaming space, it has eclipsed our previous initiatives. Given our total focus on serving the gaming community it makes sense to reposition it as our primary brand. Seven years ago, Justin.tv pioneered live video on the Web, and while I remain proud of all the work we did under that name, I’m even more excited about our new future as Twitch.”

Twitch has said that part of their growth is due to Twitch integration on PS4. In less than two months after the console launched, over 20 percent of broadcasters owned and streamed off a PS4. They suspect this growth will increase once streaming for the Xbox One happens, which is still a couple of months away.

The name change isn’t huge news but it shows the weight Twitch is now pulling as a brand. Maybe one day it’ll be a household name like Facebook.

Sooo when exactly are they going to fix their fucking infrastructure problems? I can’t ever stream from them on “mobile” (144-240p) “low” (360p) or “medium” (480p) or “high” (720p) because of their shitness and I’m on a 2mb line which can stream up to 720p. It can never buffer enough. It never gives the right amount of upload. And they’re not going to change because they fucking monopolised it all. R.I.P. own3d.tv. You were amazing.
