Two more big names pull out of competitive Overwatch

We got Doomfist, that’s great and all, but the ongoing departure of endemic esports teams from Overwatch is continuing to grow and the latest two are cause for concern. Evil Geniuses and Team LDLC are the latest teams to announce their departure from Overwatch, two teams who have been at the forefront of competitive Overwatch have now released their teams to the open market as free agents.

Evil Geniuses CEO Peter Dager bid the team farewell in their official statement:

“It’s unfortunate to see the guys going, but I’m excited to see what is next for them as they grow along with Overwatch. Talented and passionate players have always found homes here at EG and this team was full of them. I wish all of the guys the best of luck as they embark on the next journey of their esports careers.”

Franchise spots in the Overwatch League are the main cause for concern. The prices are reportedly too high for endemic organisations who are now competing with Basketball and Football teams. The other growing issue is that the Overwatch Contenders Season Zero is a scouting ground for these organisations who are looking for a team. Luckily, they now have two more teams to scout from.

Each time a big name leaves Overwatch we’re left with the same response that “Blizzard aren’t taking care of endemic organisations,” and this could be correct. There are very few orgs who can afford a spot, but Blizzard’s focus is on non-endemic interest and that’s unfortunately the direction they need to go.

Their games are usually bug free and fun. EA also likes their money as does Ubisoft and so far I have not been impressed with their games lately.

That is true, I have enjoyed every Blizzard game I’ve played. I guess I’m just salty that smaller teams (compared to pro sports teams) are loosing out to teams that have more money than they know what to do with. That’s not competition, that’s trying to create and maintain a monopoly.
