Two new Resident Evil 7 teasers show off more familiar franchise features

As a long time fan of the franchise, I’m excited for Resident Evil 7 by default. I do worry that Capcom are taking the game too far away from its roots however. With this whole new first person perspective for example, will the title even be recognisable as a Resident Evil when it launches early next year? What do the enemies even look like?

Thankfully, Capcom released a pair of teaser videos recently that somewhat eased my doubts. One of them showed an item box, inventory management system akin to Resident Evil 4, and something that leads me to believe that we will get classic puzzles. Knowing that all of those little things are present in the game is unbelievable reassuring.

Capcom have now unveiled two additional clips, and they show even more familiar features that I’m very happy to see. Here’s the first (via VG247):

“Take the time to save in #RE7… You never know what will be lurking in the shadows”

Hang on, that’s not a typewriter? It is a fixed save point however, something which modern Resident Evil titles seem to have forgotten all about in favour of autosaving.

Having such a feature present is vital to the horror genre as far as I’m concerned. It’s far more nerve-wracking venturing out to explore the unknown knowing that a death may result in loss of progression, as opposed to you know, reloading from the last doorway for example.

If you watch the video closely, you might spot another neat little feature that made me squee with delight:

Resident Evil 7 health

Is that the classic health bar, present on a smart watch of sorts? Yes, yes it is! I don’t know if that’s news to you, but it’s the first time I’ve seen this feature.

Anyhow, moving right along, the second teaser isn’t nearly as exciting as the first. It does show a very important weapon however:

“Your knife will come in handy in all kinds of situations”

The knife seems to be more important than being just a weapon in Resident Evil 7. In the trailer, it’s used to whack open a box for ammunition (pretty standard stuff), but also, to cut the tape off of an electric box (ie: it’s important to solving puzzles). I wonder what other applications the blade will have?

After seeing the two first teasers, I finally got around to playing the Resident Evil 7 demo last night. I think it’s ok to start getting hyped for the game – I really like what I’m seeing! Here’s hoping it is actually good when it launches in January 2017.
