Ubisoft Press Conference Roundup

Ubisoft

Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains got the conference started with an epic guitar riff.  Just goes to show how cool and hip Ubisoft is.  Can’t complain about guitar solos!  Although that was the most upbeat part of the press conference.

Voice command Rocksmith?  Looks pretty cool, I gotta say.  Nice to not need a controller when playing a game that doesn’t need a controller.  Very good use of voice control technology.

Aisha Tyler was the host for the event, with tons of energy – was rather impressed with her, although no one seemed to laugh at her jokes, until she got her mic fixed.  Her shirt was promoting #girlwood – random.

20 August is the release date for Splinter Cell: Blacklist.  Spies v Mercs makes its comeback, and yeah, the game looks pretty intense.

Next was Rayman Legends.  Wow was it pretty, with a new female viking character who boasted Brave-style cuteness mixed with bizarrely impressive boobs.  Seriously, it was disconcerting, but cool.  And the crowd went wild!  Especially considering it’s coming 3 September.  There is no doubt this is a fan favorite.

Next came The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.  Yay for capitalism?  Teaching people to protect their loot and go steal from others.  The game is still in beta, but at least the announce was rather cute and funny.  Seemed to take a page from Shrek’s book.  Still not sure about the game itself.  At least they had a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

South Park: the Stick of Truth came next.  But all we got was a trailer and the hashtag NagasakiFart.  Yeah, funny, but still no new news.  Suppose we’ll just have to keep waiting for more info.

Finally, it was time for next-gen.  Aisha welcomed Yves, who looked like a midget next to her.  But he has such a cute French accent, it’s okay.

The Crew is a new racing game, but truly, that doesn’t really cover what it is.  Combining street racing with rally cars and super cars, this game is a breed of its own.  You run a crime syndicate and take over the US one city at a time.  And it’s open world.  Oh, and just like the new Need for Speed, it blurs the line between single player, co-op and multiplayer.  I suppose this is the new trend in racing games.  I’m probably a car barbarian, but this game looked pretty similar to Need for Speed.  Cool, but I can’t really tell the difference.  This despite watching what started to feel like a never-ending demo run – the audience even experienced a bunch of preemptive applause.  It just kept going and going.  Ubisoft obviously doesn’t know about pacing its presentation.

Following this came Watch Dogs.  The trailer was already leaked, so yeah, not really a big reveal on this one.  Although the game does look really cool.  As Darryn commented during the briefing “Next-gen waterproof cellphone with unlimited battery physics” and it certainly does look like fun.

Then for Just Dance 2014.  Designed to be filled with singing and dancing and looking like an idiot at home.  Coming to all platforms in October 2013, we even get a brief shot of someone using their Wii U gamepad for something.

Rabbids Invasion the TV show is launching soon, and you can play it, too.  Because Rabbids are cool, and even cooler on your TV!  It was almost reminiscent of the Xbox One launch, TV!  TV!  TV!

Back to “core gamer goodness”, it was finally time Assassin’s Creed.  Yay for pirates!  While the game certainly looks way better than Assassin’s Creed III, I think everyone is nervous about how it will actually work and what we can expect.  The game certainly looked cool, but hard to tell what the game play will be like.

Trials came next with two versions. Trials Fusion is coming to console and PC and Trials Frontier for mobile devices.  Yay for motorcycles, I guess.  It didn’t blow my hair back, but I’m sure some people will be happy with this.

Finally came Massive Entertainment’s contribution, The Division.  Gotta love a game that starts with a pandemic from money.  Tom Clancy is behind this shooter, and I’ve gotta say that it looks pretty cool.  Played on the PS4, this over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter has elements of survival, action and drama.  And it’s got such pretty graphics!  This is definitely a game to watch out for.

Despite all this, I only have hate for Ubisoft.  Not even a whisper about Beyond Good and Evil 2.  There is no excuse for them teasing us and not even giving us a hint that it is still coming!  Evil, evil Ubisoft!
