Ubisoft’s lack of female representation in new games like Assassin’s Creed Unity and Far Cry 4 has caused quite a bit of controversy in the realm of videogames. The debate about diversity in games has flared up once again, with the vociferous from both camps making a lot of noise.
Some think Ubisoft should do what they will for the sake of their art, others that they need to be more inclusive. According to Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot, the company will do its best to add a dash of diversity to its future games.
“We are working on that," Guillemot told CVG. "We want to spend more time on the worlds and characters in our games… you will see more and more of this at Ubisoft. We’ll try to be less like we have been in the past with some characters. We’ll try to extend more diversity."
Guillemot said he’s realised that the male focus in games would be divisive, and the rift that characters like Watch Dogs’ Aiden Pearce would create.
"We knew it would be polarising," said Guillemot in reference to Aiden Pearce and Watch Dogs. "Some people loved the characters and some didn’t. It was difficult to please everybody with that character. Now, having seen the reaction, we know what we will do next to improve that.”
Expect more female representation in Ubisoft’s games. The trick now, is to do it right. Ubisoft is caught in a tricky position. It’s impossible to please everybody all of the time, so even when they do add more diversity, expect complains of their new female protagonist’s breasts being too big, or not big enough. She’ll probably be too sexy…or not sexy enough. She’ll be too tough…or not tough enough. And so on, ad infinitum.
It’s great that Ubisoft is planning on being more inclusive, but you have to wonder to what end? Next people will expect games featuring black people who aren’t urban stereotypes, or homosexuals who aren’t sexually depraved fetishists. Madness.

They are. Its called Far Cry 4, and their official statement is that its programmed on the PC and will be port to console. They also say that the consoles will have Ultra High Graphics equal to the PC. Translation: We are nerfing Ultra High settings on the PC so that the consoles peasants wont cry in their corn flakes.

Agreed. It’s absolute horseshit that they do this. It also makes no sense whatsoever to put DRM on games that have a shitload of (worthwhile) DLC content such as Civ5, Mass Effect or Batman. Those games can only really be enjoyed without being cracked.

I think it is in Ubisoft’s interest to not upstage the new consoles with a vastly superior PC version this early in the PS4/One lifecycle. They depend on console sales, so they want to convince people that the PS4/One produce visuals on par or not far behind the best PCs.
Releasing a PC version that leaves the PS4/One in the dust is just not good business for them.

It will inevitably happen considering 60% of the market are bitching males. The other 40% do not seem very vocal unless there is an article about sexism.
Also, when the DATA farming from Bioware revealed that everybody played as a male Shepard I can see why the suits will not green light a female protag.
Bioshock had to move Liz to the back of the box because the market said so.
As for the bravery of Naughty Dog when they pushed to have the female on the front of the box for The Last of Us… Another reason why I went the PS4 route. They have more games with female leads even if they all look like Ellen Page. Tired of Master Chief.
So next gen has come and we now have they most boring character ever created in Watch Dogs. ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….. Yawn.

For games like AC: Unity where you can customize your character I think having the option to choose a female character is important, but for games like Far Cry 4 where they have a single pre-defined character then gender is less important than the story they are telling.
Far Cry 4 will probably feature several female characters who, while not as important as the villain or hero, are still central to the plot.

This whole argument of being more “inclusive” is just stupid.
If it’s got a female lead then great. If it doesn’t then great.
As long as whatever lead there is makes sense then by all means go for it. But the bitching about whether games are inclusive enough needs to stop. Play what is fun for you, develop a game that makes sense.
Mark my words. This whole thing about games needing to be more inclusive is going to lead to phrases such as “tacked on protagonists” just like “tacked on multiplayer” and “tacked on Single Player” are terms now because people demanded both SP and MP in all games back in the day. When they finally got it they moaned that it was too rushed and that devs should focus solely on SP or MP and not both.
The same is going to happen with characters and we are all eventually going to beg for individual stories revolving around single focused protagonists because this whole “generic story just so that it fits both male and female roles” is going to be a problem. Mark my words

That’s a silly thing to be angry about. Far Cry? Oh I’m sorry put a movie on the silver screen of some guy who needs to get in to some shady business to survive a horrific island where you have crazy men running around and it would be a box office hit with woman all fawning over whoever they chose to play the role as the main character. Do it in a game and suddenly it’s unfair because you can’t play as a woman or because there aren’t many female protagonists?
Now imagine the Far Cry story had to be made more generic to fit in a female lead and male lead in the main story. How would the game play out then and how bland would the story be?

Nah, I know you’re not attacking.
It’s a trap one could fall in to. That’s all I’m saying. Some games like Mass Effect was able to create a detailed story and world with either or and that’s mostly due to its genre. It allows far more creativity and stories that lend it self to a gender neutral environment.
However, there are some games where this wouldn’t be ok. I’ve used some other examples previously but I have another one:
Bioshock infinite: The story could not possibly have worked if Booker was female. Sure, it could have been the single mom that could had given up Elizabeth BUT then the whole middle part of the game and the baptism thing would have had to fall away which would have destroyed the game (Woman weren’t allowed in the army as soldiers back then so therefore the whole being upset over what Booker did in the war thing could not have been such a pivotal story plot point.) If they had to make the story generic it would have been far less entertaining as a story and the game would have been just another run and gun.
That’s why I’m saying the whole thing about every game needing to be more representative is silly.
Do it where it makes sense (Mass Effect etc) but don’t do it where it doesn’t make any sense or would remove from the story.
That’s why it could easily end up with generic story lines that can fit both roles and gems such as Bioshock Infinite (The story line anyway) would never exist because “it can’t represent a woman in the main story” which would be stupid. It limits creativity to think that way.
Let developers create stories and worlds that they feel would work for their game. Be it mixed, female only or male only.
It doesn’t matter because it goes about the experience and not whether your gender appears as a strong role in the game.

Mass Effect is a RPG where it doesn’t matter whether your lead is male or female. But there are other games where it wouldn’t make sense.
Sleeping dogs for example. Would it have made sense if the main character was a female?
Far Cry4 as well. People moan about it, but it wouldn’t have made sense from the way the story was told. The story would have needed huge tweeks to allow a female lead and it would have taken away from the overall story.
Dead Space: Would it have made sense if Isaac was female? No.
I’m not saying it’s impossible (as you said ME proved it’s possible) but it all depends on genre and story.
ME was a vast open world (galaxy?) RPG and so a story could be told from any gender (The same is true for most RPG’s such as KotOR, Diablo, NeverwinterNights, etc).
But specific story driven games such as Deadspace or FC or even Crysis (I can’t believe I just put Crysis in the same sentence as “story driven”) would not make sense and would be silly to expect both genders to be able to take a lead.

Ah fuck, the first UFC reviews are in on Meta and it’s not looking good. I get to put off purchasing a new console for a while longer.
And all this PC talk about gender in gaming is really becoming old shtick. I play the games I want regardless of the lead character and as for Watch Dogs, it was really pretty lame in the story dept and Aiden was a terrible character. The game was jarring when you went from a stealth approach to just “kill everyone”. Felt totally out of place in that game.

Its still too early to tell. Do not look at the user reviews as that will be filled with butt hurt Fight Night fanboys.
As a sport game with a steep learning curve for the casuals I expect a 7/10.
But at the moment they seem to be complaining about the collision detection and that they focused more on the Arcade feel instead of the SIM side.
Will wait and see. I just do not understand why they tried to change what was already a master piece by THQ. Besides that shit grappling minigame.

I’m still just a UFC fanboy so will still be playing it prob. Fight Night was actually a great series even if boxing is now obsolete (imo, I used to watch a lot of it) so dunno what they complaining about. Ea were talking an “every alternate year” approach for UFC and Fight Night having at least one titles a year. Better than spewing out one every 12 months I guess.
The THQ games were great and spot on with that kak mini-grapple-game.

What the hell kind of racist and homophobic rhetoric is that? Of course you’d only see it as ‘madness’; being a crusty ass white, cis hetero guy yourself who is always over-represented in every single media in existence, you’re so used to the privileges you benefit from that obviously you’d have the audacity to not only assert them but deny others different from yourself (PoC, women, LGBTQIA+, disabled people) the right to also see themselves in media, especially considering that we make up most of the gaming population (as well moviegoers, book readers, etc.).
Maybe before pulling bullshit like that out of your ass you should do research on why representation for marginalized groups of people is important; A simple Google search isn’t that goddamn hard, Jesus Christ. And since I’m not here to educate your bigoted ass, you can correct your mistakes and be a better person, otherwise you and your mayoheaded pasty ass can go fuck yourself and go back to Reddit.
