Ubisoft’s lost money too

We might, unfortunately, soon see the end of publisher THQ – responsible for games like Darksiders, Saint’s Row and Company of Heroes. Following reports of its financial losses yesterday, the company’s shares have dropped in value by close to 50%. they’re not the only one’s losing money; in its most recent financials French mega-publisher Ubisoft has also reported losses.

The company’s announced it’s lost £26 million ($41 million)  for the six month period ended September 30. That’s actually an improvement over last year’s loss of £29 million during the same period. That’s off the back of £223 million worth of video games sales – the bulk of which came from two pretty disparate titles.

“First-half sales were buoyed by the performance of Ghost Recon Future Soldier and the digital segment, as well as by the initial sell-in of Just Dance 4,” said the publisher’s chief executive Yves Guillemot.

Despite the losses, Ubisoft outlook remains pretty rosy; the released financials don’t take the exceptional performance of Assassin’s Creed 3 – which, after 3.5 million sales in its first week, has become the company’s fastest selling title in its 25 year history. Plus, there’s still more big hitter from Ubisoft before the year’s though; including Far Cry 3 and a handful of Wii U launch titles.

“However, those large-scale marketing campaigns for Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 should pave the way for an exceptional year-end, with a significant increase in both sales and profitability,” Guillemot added, concluding with

“From a longer-term perspective, Wii U’s progression and the arrival of the next generation of consoles, combined with the strong momentum in the free-to-play model for PC, mobile and tablet games, will enable us to capitalise on the investments we have made in recent years.”

Hopefully they’ll make enough money to finish up Beyond Good and Evil 2.
