UFC knocked Xbox Live out

If you live in a country where the hardware you buy is actually wholly supported (Read: USA), you can watch live UFC matches right from your Xbox 360. If you’re the sort who enjoys watching monosyllabic, sweaty men pummelling the snot out of each other, then that’s a pretty nifty feature. Or at least it would be.

If it worked.

Last Friday, UFC 141 was meant to be available to watch – as a pay-per-view event – on the Xbox 360, using the consoles new digital TV services. It was to be such a grand event, that Microsoft gave away 30 000 tokens to watch the thing for free. Turns out the swathes of freeloaders, coupled with the unprecedented masses actually paying for the privilege brought the whole thing to its knees – with users reporting constant buffering and perpetual resolution changes – with some even unable to run the UFC app at all.

It was so bad, that Microsoft’s had to issue a rather humble apology to Bitmob:

"The broadcast of UFC 141 through the UFC for Xbox LIVE application was hampered by technical issues appearing in the hours leading up to the fight. Despite restoring service to some users during the course of UFC 141, there is a great deal of room for improvement. All 30,00 users who registered to view UFC 141 for free will be provided access to a future fight at no cost.

"We want to ensure that the 30,000 giveaway recipients for UFC 141 have an optimal experience with UFC on Xbox LIVE, and we are currently working with our partners at the UFC to ensure we deliver just that. The gamertags of the 30,000 users who registered for UFC 141 are being safely kept on file for free access to a future UFC event, and we will have more updates to share in the near future."

Caged violence seems to be really popular. Personally, I don’t see the attraction of watching grown men knocking each other about for no real reason other than people’s entertainment – but I’m not going to judge those who do enjoy it.

You testosterone-driven savages.
