We unbox a PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR has been out for about a month now – and it’s pretty damned good! While it doesn’t have the wand-tracking accuracy of the Vive, it’s a hell of a lot more comfortable and the actual headset tracks beautifully. It also features a 3 sub-pixel RGB display instead of the 2 sub-pixel pentile display in both the Rift and the Vive, so despite a lower overall resolution, it has more pixels and is pretty damned clear.

How do I know this? Well, I’ve been using one for about a week now, trying just about everything I can do in a virtual world. The PlayStation VR is set for release in South Africa on January 24 next year, with an expected (but not quite confirmed) price of around R6999. On top of that, you’ll also need a PlayStation 4 camera and optionally, two PlayStation move wands if you want motion control.

All in, it’s quite expensive, but considerably less than it would cost to buy either the Vive or the Rift. It’s less powerful, but still very capable of driving the sort of immersive experiences you expect from VR. And it all works quite well on a regular, non Pro PS4.

We’ve been trying everything we can get our eyes and hands on, but it’s still early days for the PSVR. We’ll have a review up as soon as we can, along with reviews of the games and experiences we have.

With neither the Vive nor the Rift set to launch in SA any time soon, the PSVR is the only real option. Thankfully, from experience so far, it’s a more than worthwhile one if you’re looking to embrace Virtual Reality.

Looking at the header alt-text I spent a few seconds wondering when a) the PSV was released and b) what is a Runboxing?

Runboxing, because screw normal boxing, now you’ll do it while running XD. This is where the _ would have been great for spacing.

Mmm… the headset being a bit heavier make me wonder how it will affect a persons neck in the end of the day. From what I can see it looks fairly heavy on the one side. And from my experience that can cause some muscle pain.

It’s INFINITELY more comfortable than the front-heavy VIVE. I’ve worn it for a few hours at a go – it’s heavier, but it’s balanced.
