No PS4 stock constraints?

So, after claiming that demand might outstrip supply, it has now emerged that Sony is allowing unlimited pre-orders for the PS4 at GameStop.  Normally, each store is allocated a certain number of units – it appears that Sony is lifting all restrictions on pre-orders.

In a memo leaked to GameTrailers, GameStop stores received the following information:

Starting now, through this weekend and until further notice, Sony has allowed us to take unlimited preorders beyond your current allotments. In other-words, the flood gates are open for PS4 system reserves, we will let you know when to stop preordering based on limited quantities.

So, flood gates are open, yet Sony is worried about demand exceeding supply.  Not too sure about this mixed message.  Perhaps it’s a way for GameStop to get all the PS4s out there and ensure that they are the only suppliers.  Or maybe it’s a sign that they have actually ramped up the manufacture of the PS4 and we won’t need to worry about issues with supply.  Hope they learned their lesson after the PS3 ran low on stock at launch.

I also find it amusing that the very next section in the memo reminds sales people not to over reserve the Xbox One.  Are we expecting high demand or low supply?  Either way, I still think it’s a good idea to pre-order your next-gen console; who knows how many units will be available in South Africa and I don’t want to be left without one.

Even if I could afford it. I’m not sure I’ll pre-order a console. Odds are good I will get one. Just not sure I want to. I might have some spare cash lying around later in the year, and then I pre-order, so don’t take my word as gospel.

I pre-ordered one, it was a moment of weakness. I just need to avoid going through with the purchase.

Wonder what the sales figures in the US will be like now that the Xbox is back as a contnder. I remember reading that inital pre-orders for the Xbox1 were under 25% of those of the PS4, but now the XB1 pre-orders have sky-rocketed.

    hmmmm….

Either way, I have decided to keep with PC till mid/ late 2014 and see where the market is at afterwards. Got a funny feeling that PC will be this generations winner…..who knows.

There were multiple chains of Gamespots talking about how their system allotments were 60 PS4, and 16 Xbox Ones available, per store.

Whether I get a console or not, my PC deserves an upgrade. It hasn’t had one since 2007!! I first blamed WoW, then my internet was stolen and now I blame Telkom because so many games have dropped the LAN and gone to Steam!

Ja, you need to upgrade your PC. You gotta wait for the right time, when components for the new architecture are pushing down the prices of the older stuff.

Oh right, I keep forgetting about that. We are going to have a rough time ahead folks. The Rand’s going to go down a bit more, if my logic is correct.

until the strike action has bee nsorte out, foreign direct investment (which keeps SA afloat) will continue to decline. And if one of the major mining houses goes down, then we are in HUUUUGE kak.

Wow its really bad at the moment, but from what I have been told the new hardware architecture is going to be a bit more stable for PC and should be coming in Q1 2014…..That will be the real decider. Will prices come down or not….

When Intel brings out a Tri-Gate 8 Core CPU then I’ll be getting me that. Hopefully MP will still be free in PC games by then.

Cant see them changing that rule, there is so much pirating in PC as is, cant see them adding another cost to the MP equation. If so, they would have done it already with the major competitive games like SC2, LoL and DOTA 2. Final DOTA 2 will be for free and they will be making their money off the micro transactions.
And look at MMORPG’s. The only 2 left that still charge are WoW and Eve (I think).
PC gamers are too fussy to be bothered to pay for online gaming nowadays, they will just go somewhere else if its not free.
