Until Dawn: Rush of Blood made me scream

Rush of blood pig

I already knew I’d enjoy PlayStation VR at rAge this past weekend. After playing London Heist, I was sold on the headset. So, when I heard that there would be VR at rAge and I’d get to go face-on with Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, I jumped at the chance to experience more fun VR. And wow did I enjoy it again, even if there are a couple things I’d tweak.

First up, I played the demo standing, using the PS4 controller. It was surprising to me that I could use the controller instead of the move controllers and still have such an immersive experience. Then again, the controls didn’t really require much more than triggers and bumper for shooting and reloading respectively. As for aiming, my virtual hands were close together so it made sense for my real hands to be close together, and in the heat of the moment I was shooting with both hands anyway.

I don’t want to give anything away because I think part of the horror is experiencing it for yourself. But in the first few minutes of the demo, I was looking around the environment, when I got one of the biggest jump scares of the whole experience. I shrieked, followed by many a swear word that I won’t repeat. From that moment on, it was like an action-packed rollercoaster – I went through some lulls and some crazy highs and shot plenty of terrifying dudes coming right for me. It was an adrenaline-fueled joyride and I loved almost everything about it.

I saw almost because there were a couple things I wish had been done differently. Mainly, I don’t think they should have given the option to stand for the demo. At one point, the experience turns into a literal roller coaster as you do some crazy downhill and twisting moves. Seeing as you aren’t exactly standing in the demo itself, it made no sense to have me standing for that – once I sat down, I enjoyed it a whole lot more.

What I was most intrigued by was the visual quality. At the beginning, while calibrating, I kept saying that it was blurry. I could read the big text, but the fine print just wasn’t totally crisp or clear. I got it as clear as possible, but it wasn’t 100%. However, once the actual demo started, it was fine. Sure, it wasn’t as perfectly crisp as I might be used to on my 4k TV, but with all the movement and activity, I honestly didn’t notice. More importantly, I wasn’t dizzy or nauseous afterwards, never once feeling any simulator sickness.

Despite a thoroughly enjoyable experience, I’m not sure I’d want to do that chapter again right away. Yes, I missed some collectibles and didn’t have 100% accuracy with my shooting, but I went through the demo and enjoyed it – I don’t necessarily see the point in repeating it. Then again, if the original reports about it are true and there are other paths my mine cart could have taken, maybe it would be worth facing my fears again to try and find something new.

I have terrible issues with vertigo that I’ve mentioned before, and am seeing specialists to try and resolve it, but as a result I was 100% confident that I couldnt do Until Dawn VR standing up, but they had a small block right behind where you stand so I simply asked them if I could sit on that, and besides a few camera tweaks needed to accommodate the lower angle, it worked perfectly. Actually, as you mentioned, since the character was sitting down it felt WAY more immersive, like I was in the right position and skin as the player should be.

That said, with my issues, after the proper high speed dipping and roller coaster parts, I suffered from massive disorientation and was off balance and a little motion sick for around 4 hours after the fact. My case is pretty heavy though, but I also heard from other people like the folks at Kinda Funny that they only experienced this on Until Dawn because of the roller coaster stuff, and since i haven’t tried anything else out yet, I don’t have a good idea of what other stuff will do to me, but I do have hope that I’ll be able to handle it

And yes, just to confirm, had I been standing I would have most probably taken that entire headset and stand down with me haha

          THIS!!!

I like to think I can handle a horror game or two – even in the correct setting ( dark room, headset on, cold wind blowing on my neck )

But based on the immersion experienced with something like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive – I don’t think I’ll be able to handle such games – heart-attack in 3…2…1…

( And it’s not like I have a weak heart that’s filled with Cholesterol or shit – I mean, sure, there prolly is a bit of Cholesterol … it’s good Cholesterol, but it spreads like bad Cholesterol )

Still you have to admit it was awesome. I enjoyed every bit of the Until Dawn demo. Wish it went on longer.
I’d be jumping on with VR as soon as possible if it were cheaper. That R7k price tag is a bit much to go out and get it straight away. So I’m going to have to wait a bit before I get it.
