uPlay for Watch Dogs on PC only for activation [Update]

[Update]

Since release, we’ve discovered this to not be true. We got bad info – only it came straight from our Ubisoft rep. We apologise to anybody inconvenienced by having to use uPlay.

You may have heard that yes, Watch Dogs for the PC will indeed use uPlay, despite previous rumours to the contrary. Well, we’ve got good news.

We’ve just been told by Ubisoft that uPlay will only be used to activate the game. It’ll be a once-off connection to activate the game and the DLC, and you’ll never need to see uPlay again. Hooray!

I think the reception to  uPlay’s omission from South Park: The Stick of Truth has made people at Ubisoft take notice; PC gamers don’t want to have to run the service in parallel with other DRM systems like Steam – no matter what perceived value Ubisoft sees in it. Hopefully, this is the push Ubisoft needs to drop uPlay as a requirement for all of its PC games going forward.

Watch Dogs is coming to PC, Ps3, Ps4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on May 27th.

It’s only halfway up. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to see what new specials they have on Steam. 🙂

No gaming problems? I’m apprehensive to make the jump, seeing as Win 7 is perfectly fine.

None at all, just running Win8, not 8.1

8.1 user here, been using 8 for a year+ now.

I have no issues with it, its snappier than 7, games run without issues and you can just add the start menu with “classic shell” if you dislike metro (be aware that the start menu will be officially added back to 8.1 in a future update).

I don’t use any legacy software so I’m not sure about compatibility issues there.

I’ve used it twice and thought it felt too much like a dumbed down hippie version with all the blocks and kak. But that could just be me. 🙂

Windows 8.1: “Good news, we put back the start button on the desktop! But it still takes you to the unnecessary full screen kak menu”

I really hate that thing. If I wanted to feel like I’m working on a tablet or a phone, I’d use a tablet or a phone.

From using XP, Vista and 7 I’ve gotten used to pressing the Windows key to make the taskbar appear so I can see the time.
8 just takes me to that dodgy menu.

You need Windows 8 to run DX 11.2, this is the only reason I upgraded. Its not too bad although still has some compatibility issues with some programs..

Steam does it better than other DRM clients. Origin,uPlay, etc. needs to deal with it.

Yes it would and it would be nice if the customer could choose which client they want to use instead of being force to use crappy Steam for 99% of the games.

Ya ya , that’s what they saying now , come launch it’s Gana be patch uplay this then steam will have to patch the patch and then after 2 months u can finally play the game

I can see where this is headed , if ubisoft tacked on the uplay steam stuff to late then early adopters are Gana be beta testers

Someone said it the other day , pull yourself towards yourself , make uplay and the other drms a channel within steam , and completly drop the other crap off the batt once an for all

We need some one like steam to be making these decsions , pc is a ball ache to begin with , let’s simplify the customer experience so the point where it’s simpler to game on pc , having only one drm to manage all game services , simple unfied gaming ….

SteamOS will be an even bigger pain to get started with I think. At least with Windows it’s a known environment.
