Valkyria Chronicles getting PS4 remaster and sequel… in Japan

I adored Valkyria Chronicles back in the day. It wasn’t a huge success at the time, in part because of its strange storybook approach to storytelling and its odd approach to turn-based combat, but it was one of my favorite strategy experiences on the PlayStation 3. It came to PC last year, and now it appears ready to invade new generation consoles as well. Plus, there’s news that makes me even happier.

First up, as revealed in the latest Famitsu, Valkyria Chronicles is getting remastered for PS4 with high resolution graphics, DLC and trophies. It’s launching in Japan on 10 February, so let’s just hope that it will be coming to the West not too long after that. I would be excited to pick this up regardless, but I’m particularly amped because the release will include a demo for Valkyria: Azure Revolution.

Valkyria: Azure Revolution will launch in Japan in at the end of 2016 and will feature a real-time battle system with added simulation elements.

Prologue: With the discovery of the azure mineral Ragnite, the powerful Rus Empire achieved rapid industrial development and expanded its territory. Jutland, a small country, is econmically blockaded by the large country, and advocating “independence and freedom from colonial rule,” strikes the empire army’s base.

Developed by Media Vision, let’s just hope that the game makes it to the West sooner rather than later – I am really excited to jump into this on the new consoles. Good guy Sega should give players what they want… right?

I know, remasters are evil and we shouldn’t support them, but I’m sort of happier with remasters than with backwards compatibility. You’d be surprised how awful some of your favorite games on older consoles look when upscaled to modern TVs. I know many remasters are poorly implemented cash grabs, but when they are true to the soul of the game, they give many players an opportunity to experience a beloved game or franchise without the constant reminder of just how old and outdated it is.
