Valve developer disses the PSN

Yesterday we posted up the Gearbox bosses opinion that Valve needs to start developing on the PS3 and embracing the PS3 community.

Well not a day later and Valve are back in the news with yet another anti-PS3 stance.

This time they are not complaining about the PS3 itself though, instead Left 4 Dead 2’s project lead, Chet Faliszek, has confirmed that Left 4 Dead won’t be coming to the PS3 due to the subpar community aspects of the PS3.

Valve has good games, but to be honest they are a bunch of idiots… Why do they not just support a platform that has about 20 million players, do they not want money and support?

Half life 2 was awesome, but really valve must go die for their complete lack of gaming progress.

Its got nothing to do with any community aspects but rather an inability to create quality titles through lazy developement.

There’s no such thing as lazy developers, whoever started this trend needs to get their head straight. A company makes a decision based on the potential return on investment. They don’t go “damn, I’ve worked long on the Xbox version, screw the PS3, let’s go home”.
Upper management makes this decision, not the programmers and artists actually doing the work so lazyness doesn’t have anything to do with it.

The first two posters are retarded and unable to look at something from a larger angle.

It simply doesn’t make financial sense to Valve as a company (remember, they bankroll their own games, unlike EVERYONE else publishing at their level) to support development on the PS3 right now. Especially if they’re used to having the robust, user-focused services of Steam and XBL. The L4D2 team can’t just say “Oh, right, we’re going to spend another 4-6 months working on these community things we need that aren’t there on the PS3”, they can’t afford to do that. It’s not a sound investment of that time.

To be dead honest, the only reason there’s a 360 version of L4D and L4D2 is because Microsoft made it a priority to have a development environment and platform that was similar to the PC. If huge amounts of effort had to go into porting the game to console, Valve wouldn’t be doing it. Hence no budget to spend the time porting to PS3.

Even on 360 Valve’s probably uncomfortable, not being able to bring content updates to users for free like they can on Steam.

No you are being single minded, Valve is making money by the bucket load. They own Steam, and they charge other developers a fee for using their platform. Nonetheless EA publishes their games for box games.

      http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/02/19/gabe-newell-valve-are-very-rich-its-awesome/

Sony actually supports and helps developers whom are making games for their platform.

The fact that they have not supported the ps3 is because they are lazy for not embracing new and interesting technology (the ps3), and have been paid by Microsoft to only use their platforms. All they have to do is increase their development staff, and port over, not hard if it’s what they do.

Oh and you can actually have downloadable patches through the console, so your point is mute.

Valve’s arrogance is just annoying, like I said, their games are great but they just must make games and stop killing people with their activation steam service.

dislekcia may be more know about this topic, but that does not mean he isn’t an arrogant moose knuckle.
if he actually knows what he is talking about (most questionable), then he would not need to insult other people because of their opinions…
i think he’s just a fanboy needing a slap imo

Ok, addressing your points in order:

-Any distribution system charges the game studios that use it. This is not new. Steam’s revenue shares are some of the best in the business and their continuous system growth, marketing and integration make them the BEST digital distributor, by far.

-Yes, SONY does support developers that are making games for their platform. They sort of *have to*, the alternative would just be ludicrous… However, their support and APIs are sorely lacking when compared to Microsoft or even Nintendo developer integration (and Ninty are not known for being great to work with). This is not new, if you don’t trust my personal experience with the platforms, there are more than enough other developers talking about this…

-Proof for the “paid by Microsoft” thing please? Also, not hard? So all they have to do is pay more people for more time and delay their current projects in order to possibly make a return on that investment? Remember, they have an entire engine and system they’re already developing with, that entire time investment is the reason they can produce games fast. They would have to redo most of that to get acceptable performance on the PS3. The whole point is that they’ve done the math and gone “Hey, this doesn’t work for us from a cost perspective”. It’s that simple, call it lazy and “not wanting to work with interesting technology” all you want, that just makes you look stupid 🙂

-On Xbox 360 it is Microsoft policy that game patches may not contain content. That means that new maps, items and gameplay modes have to arrive via paid DLC. Valve’s PC strategy is free DLC, it’s a big part of their marketing. Obviously they’re sort of peeved about this, or did you not notice the difference between TF2 on PC and console? Go take another look…

-Killing people with their Steam service? Hah. Wow. You need to rethink that: Steam is the reason that more independent developers have been able to grow, it’s the only reason UT3 wasn’t a commercial failure (go google how that worked, fascinating stuff!) and has helped millions of people get games they would otherwise never have seen, let alone bought. Steam is an exceedingly positive move in the games industry and Valve deserve kudos for working extremely hard to keep it fair and equitable once it started being successful instead of just a developer’s dream.

-> Feel free to slap away 😉

Must agree with Valve here, just got back onto PS3 andi agree the community options of the Ps3 sux. I hate that you cant just jump into a friends game if there is an opening, cant jump into a party chat, basically you cant do anything, unless you ask, and ppl ask why you pay for xbox Live.

IMO any person calling posters retards should be banned. Yes Banned. Even if you are correct there is no reason to insult people. It is Valve’s decision for which platform they want to develop for but they should learn some tact.

It’s pretty funny that you haven’t responded to any of the points raised. Willful ignorance is willful.

See how I don’t feel the need to respond to insults? That’s because I don’t need a crutch to dismiss you with 🙂

thats the problem guy… you dismiss with utter disdain, which be default makes all your ‘proper’ assessments null and void.
treat others with respect and your ‘insightful’ comments will be better received.

i’m sure your ‘superior’ intellect will understand that 😉

Respect is earned, not demanded. Why should I bother treating flamebaiting trolls with anything OTHER than disdain?

Does anyone need respect to get facts across? No. But people sure need it to defend their bullshit opinions.
