Valve are in the process of fixing Team Fortress 2’s casual matchmaking problems

The Meet Your Match update was exactly what Team Fortress 2 needed. It added a competitive mode to the game in the form of ranked 6v6 matchmaking, which was long overdue to say the least (the class shooter has been out for almost a decade now for crying out loud).

The patch also included a casual mode – 12v12 unranked matchmaking – for those who like to play Team Fortress 2 not-as-seriously. Unfortunately, this part of the update has been nothing but problematic for both Valve and players.

The latter naturally, are super upset. A quick peek at recent Team Fortress 2 Steam reviews is a pretty solid indication of how pissed some people are. My favourite by far comes from Ninja Consultant (10/10 name). He has 2,846 hours on record (holy hell), and says the following in his opening paragraph:

I’m really liking the new “If you don’t want to play competitive then ???? you” update.

Valve as you’d expect, are working to fix the problems and annoyances riddling casual matchmaking. They’ve detailed exactly what they’re planning to do in a new blog post (via PC Gamer):

It’s no secret that Casual Mode has had a rough launch. We wanted to give you an update on what we’re doing to address your concerns.

Short version: We hear you. Later today, we will be shipping a patch to Casual Mode that will remove the penalties for abandoning a game, and allow you to narrow your game mode selections from two modes to a single mode before queuing. Additionally, in the very near future, we will be shipping a more comprehensive Casual Mode patch that will let you select the maps you will be matched into.

If you’ve suffered from long queue times in-game, that has nothing to do with the your mode selections or the potential lack of players. Apparently it’s just a nasty bug.

The queue times you are currently experiencing are a bug, not a feature. It is something we are actively working to correct. Several backend issues appeared post-launch that culminated in long wait times. Removing this issue is our highest priority right now.

Well, at least Valve are addressing the problem head on. What has your experience of the Meet Your Match update been like? Have you been battling with some of the issues mentioned above too? Hopefully they’ll all be abolished soon.

Scout will get a buff that allows him to blink 3 times and turn back the clock a few seconds. He also gets a sex change and she will use dual pistols instead of a shotgun.
