Videogame History Museum finds a permanent home

I’m not the biggest fan of museums. Sure, they can be interesting, but I can only handle looking at so many ancient relics before my brain decides to be well and truly bored. What easily fascinates me though is gaming (obviously), and its history. The nice thing about it is that it has changed so much over the past few decades, and for many of us, we have been a part of it to some extent and seen how things have changed and evolved. How cool would it be to visit a museum which details and showcases all the gaming artifacts from yesteryear?

Such a place does exist, except that it never had an actual home. The Videogame History Museum was fully mobile, popping up only at various exhibits and expos (such as e3). They have a huge collection, most of which sits in storage and couldn’t really be shown off due to limited space. How freaking cool is that? There will be an actual premises one can visit if they want to see all sorts of gaming memorabilia. The National Video Game Museum has quite a ridiculously large collection too (via Dallas News)

Complete game libraries for many home game consoles including Sega (Master System, Genesis, Dreamcast, etc.), Atari (7800, 5200, Lynx, etc.), 3DO, Vectrex, Intellivision, TurboGrafx-16, ColecoVision

An extensive vintage computer software collection, including hundreds of complete, in-box games for Commodore 64, TI-99/4A, TRS-80 and VIC-20

Many rare hardware prototypes, including Atari Cosmos, Atari Game Brain, Atari 65XEP Portable computer, Atari Dr. Pong arcade machine, Atari Puppy Pong arcade machine, Atari 7800 keyboard

Arcade games including Tempest, Crystal Castles, Breakout, Super Breakout, Ms. Pac-man, Super Pac-man, Zookeeper, Anti-aircraft, Tank 2 and Cockpit Turbo

Poor Atari. Imagine their consoles caught on and they were one of the big console contenders today. There are lots of other hardware components on show too, many of which I don’t recognise or know about.

The National Videogame Museum will be the first of its kind for the nation. They plan on opening their doors in April next year. If I ever make a trip to the west in future, that would definitely be something I would want to see. What about you? Would the museum interest you or bore you to tears?
