Visceral and violent DOOM should run at 60fps

DOOM

At their inaugural E3 conference this year, Bethesda publically showcased some footage of the brand new DOOM. Showing just how powerful a franchise it is, it caused much the same sort of moral outrage it did back in the 90’s, with media critics of all sorts decrying its wanton and gratuitous violence. While the game may indeed be needlessly violent, I can’t even pretend to be upset over its chimerical depiction of non-human hellspawn being torn asunder. Doom just wouldn’t be the same without it.

And it wouldn’t be the same without crisp visuals and a buttery-smooth framerate – which is exactly what developer id software is aiming for.

Speaking to Gamespot at Quakecon, Doom’s executive producer, Marty Stratton told the publication that they were aiming to have the game running at 1080p and 60fps on consoles.

“When you’re developing, you make thousands of decisions that have an impact on performance or visual fidelity,” Stratton says. “We’ve always been at the forefront of saying we want our games to run as fast as possible at the highest resolution possible. So for us, that goal is 1080p and 60 FPS. Along with that goal, the mantra of our technology team is that we want to be the best-looking game out there at 60 FPS and 1080p. So you draw that line in the sand.”

It’s not just some sort of milestone either; Stratton says it’s absolutely necessary for the game to feel and play the way it should.

“For us it isn’t just a lofty technical goal,” he explained. “We really do think it’s important to the feel of the game, it’s important to the way our combat feels and our movement feels. It’s got to be fast, it’s got to be fluid, and it’s all based on that. It really is a gameplay goal first and foremost. You do make decisions here or there. Ultimately I don’t think you can ever expect most consumers to really nitpick.”

“If you do your best to give them a very consistent experience and a very high-quality experience, which for us is a fast, fluid 60 FPS, I think that’s the most important thing.” he continues.

While I don’t really go in much for the 30fps vs 60fps thing because I’ve had some great 30fps experiences – but I think when it comes to shooters, 60 fps makes everything better. Here’s a look at that gameplay again:

Watch how all those complaints about how the eye can only see 30fps become irrelevant when they can see oh look we have 1080P 60fps

      But do you have Precision?

But in all seriousness Have the Original Doom 3 and Doom BFG but I’ve never really played much or enjoyed it dunno why, possibly the demonic stuff

          Hmmm fair point

Just the satanic symbols and that put me off

Same applies for South Park, love the series but instantly fast forward/skip or change channel’s when they have a skit on Jesus

I hear you. For me though, I kind of took “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood,,,” and applied it to Doom. Excuse the pun, but there is no way in hell I am bringing a shotgun to an exorcism. I’ll bring lots of faith and a Bible.

Pissed me off that they made the movie “friendlier” by removing the demonic part of it. That’s what it’s about.
It’s like creating a Terminator movie and exchanging the terminator with an energizer bunny….come to think of it…that could be quite terrifying.

It’s a movie based on a game, so obviously it’s for kids. Try to keep up! Unless we’re running from a bear.

Yes, this now brings us to that grey area where people think if games are themed with violence, sex and all kinds of bad things it’s fine. But show a nipple on tv and everyone loses their minds.

            July 27, 2015 at 15:50

Actually I’ve seen it the other way around, where parent’s are fine with their kid playing GTA because why?

Because “worse is shown on TV”

Which is incorrect, TV shows it, Games actually have you participating in it

          • Captain JJ Fantasticus

            July 27, 2015 at 15:55

Or parents still tell their kids “they can’t watch that” but then the kid retreats to his/her room and plays games.
Satellite TV and those are soon going to be dead though, hopefully.
Things like Hulu and Netflix makes it so much easier.
Regardless of tv and games though, the internet is still the one they should really be looking out for.

KIds these day’s don’t have an imagination so books are kinda harmless

            Pffft kids reading books?

You ask them if they read a certain book they ask is it based on a movie or game?

            It’s the truth

I wouldn’t be so sure about that, books are still a massive industry. And I think there will always be people who enjoy books, and their kids will end up being book lovers as well.

I share the same resentment for the little kids, I used to be that age but seriously I came from the PS2 era playing GTA in my teen years as well as only ever really starting to play online when I was 18 and from that I’ve learned what’s the point of Swearing and acting like a dick online when the game is about having fun and respecting the other civilized adults online

To me it so be Git orf mah Internet, they should be playing Mario Kart or Hello Kitty and worrying about exams not kill streaks

Thing is we grew up in a very different era. We could still pass exams without studying for them. These days everything has to be spoon-fed and if anything bad happens it’s the teacher’s fault.

Doom 3 was boring. It was a stupid linear series of rooms with completely predictable monster spawning.

You enter the room, you walk forward, the door closes behind you, turn around, walk backwards a few steps, a monster spawns, kill it, turn around, walk forward a few steps, a monster spawns, kill it, exit room through door, door closes behind you, etc, etc, etc.
