Vita sales surge following PS4 release

1 min read

One of the very things that I think Sony had hoped would happen with the release of the PlayStation 4 has come to pass. People are buying PlayStation Vitas.

According to MCV, sales of the handheld increased quite significantly following the availability of the Playstation4 at retail. They say, in the UK at least, that sales of the beleaguered handheld rose by 68 per cent in the week of PS4’s launch, and  by 65 per cent the following week. no word on real numbers, but it seems to be a significant jump.

It could be down to the built-in, cross device functionality that exists between the PSVita and the PS4,  such as remote play, or second screen usage. Or, it could actually be down to PS Vita games, like Tearaway, being released.

"PS Vita sales wise we are continuing to see strong week-on-week growth since our latest campaign kicked in," said senior product manager Ben Law to the magazine, via Videogamer.  "The new TV advert went live this week and we’ve already seen amazing feedback from PS4 owners on the Remote Play feature, and the success of Tearaway highlights what [a] great proposition PS Vita is, either as a standalone device or as the perfect companion to PS4."

My money’s on people with too much cash trying to see what the Remote Play fuss is all about. In my own tests, it works pretty well, as long as you;’re connecting the Vita to the console directly. Putting a router between it adds too much latency for it to useful. Still, great to see people buying the Vita. It’s a damned good handheld, with some pretty good games. Hopefully a higher uptake means more games.

Definitely never too late. I love the screen! All pinsharp. I really, really want to get Dragon’s Crown on both Vita and PS3, but funds. And all sales are making me bankrupt as well – that after just getting the PS4 as well.

Forget the world’s credit crunch, mine is going to implode soon!

The one-word percent is standard in American English. Percent is not absent from other varieties of English, but most publications still prefer the two-word per cent.

I got a PSN Plus subscription from BT Games for R365 one Friday in June. By Sunday I bought a Vita for R2000 from BT due to all the free games. Awesome piece of kit

if you own a DS or a 3DS why would you want another handheld?

That’s like asking if you have a PS3 why have a 360 – for games! There are just certain games that will never see the light of day on the other console. Refer to Gran Turismo vs Forza, Halo vs Killzone, Last of Us, any Mario game, Zelda game, etc.

Its simply all about the games.

Yeah I love my Vita – and cross play works. Tried it on Resogun the other day and I didn’t notice any delays per se. Didn’t try other games I have but it does work and main point “it just works”. None of that faffing about doing a hundred and one other things to make them connect.

EDIT: am horribly addicted to Treasures of Montezuma Blitz. Havent paid a cent yet as its F2P but cool little game.
