Witcher

For those who have played The Witcher and The Witcher 2, the anticipation for The Witcher 3 is incredible. Seriously, that game looks amazing. Not everyone has played the original one – but now you can, and for free!

The ridiculously cool people over at Good Old Games are running a special promotion in honor of their 5th birthday. Buy ANY game, and you get the Witcher 1 for free. Now, the special only runs until next Thursday, but it’s still pretty rad. Also, all games bought on GoG.com are DRM free, which is a really nice touch. Buy any game, and you can give that game plus The Witcher to a friend if you like, or download it on all your machines.

Prepare yourself, though. While The Witcher was an amazing leap forward when it first came out, it will look a bit dated now, especially if you’ve seen the incredible videos coming out of the Witcher 3. However, for those who haven’t played with this winner of a game, it’s definitely worthwhile.

Oh, which reminds me, Beyond Good and Evil is also for sale on GoG for a mere $10. That’s $10 for Beyond Good and Evil plus you get The Witcher. Need I say more?

You have to play Nr 1. The story starts there and flows through to 3….
True the controls are a LOT different, but it is one of the few games that made me go Faaaaaaaak when I was done…

HATE the control scheme of 1, skipped the whole game, was just too frustrating. In the middle of 2 though

I am in act 3. The one thing that threw me a bit was the fighting style changed a bit! But you get used to it fast and the fighting is more action based.

I also hated the new fighting technique. In TW1 you had to study your enemy to know which technique to use. In TW2 you just button smashed. Nevertheless, I loved 2 and it still remains as my nr 1 game, that is until HL3 is released 😉

I have 1 and 2, and I’m about 15 hours into the first 1 (want to finish it before I play 2). Must be honest, I’ve found it very slow and I’m not a huge fan of the combat system. Hoping it picks up at some point, because I’m really keen to play the 2nd one! 😀

The story carries over a lot from 1 to 2, plus when you import your old save game you get a few goodies too. Combat in 2 is very different from 1 – the whole game is – love both though.

Witcher 1 is still very, very playable BUT you must grind a bit when you get to the swamp and city areas, else the game is not fun going forward and, like most of my friends, you will not complete it, because it becomes too hard at one stage.

Personally, I think the balance is a bit out, because it goes from a fun slaughter of monsters to you dying in two hits very quickly at one point. But if you are prepared, easy stuff.

Play it. Seriously. Fun consequences to the quests.

One of the early quests, with it myriad of endings and consequences, had me hooked. First little village. Those who played should know what I mean.

If you buy those games separately, then you’ll get a copy of the Witcher with every purchase.
