Like grains of sand on the beach or lies in parliament, there sure are a lot of games set in the universe of Warhammer 40K. To be fair, Warhammer 40K’s tale of several species attempting to out-murder one another on a regular basis makes for some gripping reading if you ever browse through the millions of books and comics that have been spawned since that tabletop game went big, resulting in a franchise that could best be described as H.R Giger’s Star Wars.

The video game department is no slouch either. By the time you’ve finished reading this sentence, approximately 27 new Warhammer 40K games will have been announced. Here’s one of them, which takes the focus to a more strategic series of turn-based conflict aboard a derelict space cruiser in the form of Space Hulk Tactics.

“Bringing a unique twist to the classic gameplay of the cult board game, engage in bloody battles through an immense Space Hulk – a twisted mass of asteroids, wrecked ships and debris – as either a squad of Terminator Space Marines or the deadly alien Genestealers,” developer Cyanide Studio wrote in a press release via AGD.

Which side will you choose?

Battle through two distinct, narrative-driven campaigns, from the points of view of two different factions: one campaign puts you in control of a Blood Angels squad, which you will customise and upgrade as you progress, while the other puts you in control of the Genestealers for the first time in a Space Hulk game!

Space Hulk: Tactics is based on the rules of the popular board game, given a fresh new spin in the form of the unique Card system. Cards give more ways to customize your squad before a match, and allow you to turn the tides of battle with abilities that trigger game-changing effects when used at the right moment.

Test your skills against other players in the expansive online competitive multiplayer, letting you command a swarm of Genestealers or a custom squad of different unit types from one of four Space Marine Chapters – the Blood Angels, the Space Wolves, the Ultramarines, and the Dark Angels. Multiplayer modes and tools offer a rich and deep online experience, and include an intuitive map creation tool, which gives players everything they need to create original maps with custom objective, and share them with other players to play either online or against the AI, all from within the game!

You know what? I’d play that. While Warhammer 40K is no stranger to tactics thanks to its history of Dawn of War RTS games, this feels like a fresh idea that has pinched a few influences from XCOM and the recent Mario Rabbids collaboration with Ubisoft and Nintendo. That sounds kind of fresh, and worth a gander when more details are revealed later this month at an event in France.

That, and it sounds like it’ll be a perfect opportunity to make Yu-Gi-Oh! references when those details surface. IT’S TIME TO D-D-D-D-D-DUEL WITH HULKING HUMAN GIANTS BORN FROM THE GENETIC SEED OF THE EMPEROR OF MANKIND WHOSE GOLDEN THRONE HAS BEGUN TO FAIL HIM!
