Warhammer 40K’s next RTS game is Battlefleet Gothic: Armada

Battlefleet

I’m a big fan of the Warhammer 40K universe. It’s essentially a mixture of WWE superstars, Starship Troopers and Star Wars raging battle across a universe and dimensions where the death toll from an average war clocks in billions of casualties. It’s also a universe that is ripe for video game adaptations, such as the super-popular Dawn Of War series of RTS games and the much-loved Space Marine action game. This year, Warhammer 40K goes back to the RTS genre, but they’re taking the action…TO SPA-ACE!

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is the name of the next game set in that universe. It’s all massive space battles, as the Imperial Navy takes on the forces of Chaos. Here’s the full press release and some shiny images, copied and pasted below. Because it’s Monday:

Focus Home Interactive and Tindalos Interactive are pleased to officially announce the development of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, a real time strategy adaptation of Games Workshop’s famous tabletop game for the PC. The game stages the mighty armada of the Imperial Navy’s Battlefleet Gothic against the insidious and galaxy threatening Chaos Black Crusade of Abaddon the Despoiler in dark, deadly and intense space battles.

Developed on Unreal Engine 4, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is an RTS in which the player takes command of one of these battlefleets composed of the most powerful spaceships from the Imperial, Chaos, Eldar and Ork forces, in a no-quarter given struggle for the control of the Gothic sector of space.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada offers deep management of every ship composing the player’s fleet, both during and between battles. From the fastest frigates to the gigantic, miles-long battleships, the player will customize all aspects of his ships: weaponry, defense and support sub-systems, etc. each customization affecting the very performances of the ship and the special abilities available during battle. From battle to battle, the admirals and crew of surviving ships will gain experience and promotions, improving the battle-readiness of the ship for future, bigger and more dangerous battles.

We will unveil the game to the gaming press in more detail very soon; discover now the very first screenshots of the game, captured from a very early development version of the game.

If Rhema Ministries went into space to start preaching, I’m certain that they’d have cathedral ships like that. I dig RTS games, I dig space and I dig massive battles, so I’m keen to see more of this game, which would allow me to finally put Star Wars: Empire At War away. Hopefully those new details, will be revealed soon.

Didn’t like Star Wars Empire at War – too small scale. Much preferred the old Star Wars Rebellion. This is not the 40K game I was hoping for, but if it is pretty and can bring the scale I crave, I will upgrade my PC for it. You heard it here folks, Lardus will upgrade his PC for this game or for DoW3! Or if the current one breaks more.

Starpoint Gemini was meh, played better, but 2 is really cool and fresh, you get that freelancer nostalgia plus you take over ships from enemy’s and sell them or keep them, big map.lots of ships and planets, dreadnoughts, battleships, carriers, they just got lazy at some points like docking where there is no animation or something, just a pop up at the station or planet you are on,visuals and weapons are super and customization,a really good space sim for not that much cash and they are still rolling out updates.

This is pretty fantastic! Battlefleet Gothic has a small, but dedicated following (in remembrance, at least).

More interesting, is that I had thought Fantasy Flight Games had the right to relaunch some of Games Workshop’s dead specialist games, and felt that Battlefleet Gothic would fit very comfortably in the soon-to-be-released Star Wars: Armada system – so I’m surprised to see it as a PC game firstly, and actually using the Armada tag secondly.

Still, I ain’t complainin’. Good tactical space combat has me excited!

Star Wars: Empire At War is fun, but part of me thinks it gets away with it because it is star wars. Homeworld did the whole battle in a much better way, but is not Star Wars.

Looking forward, sort of, to the new Warhammer game.

After reading the rest of the article it sounds like it will be a slightly smaller scale but with a greater degree of customisation.

I think it’s unlikely judging by the table top game it’s based on, but looking at the screens do suggest more than a single plane of play – so it’s entirely possible.

By the way, for those curious, here are some images of the ships belonging to the factions we’ll see in the game, being the Imperim (as shown in the screenshots), Chaos, Eldar, and Orks. The colour schemes won’t represent what you will see in game (though I suspect the game will have full army colour customization), as they were painted by those who owned them – still, you’ll get an idea 😀

In order, they are the fleets for The Imperium of Man, Chaos, Eldar, and Orks. Plus, bonus pics for Tau and Tyranids because they look fantastic.
