Was Assassin’s Creed 3 simply a stop gap?

tinfoil hatLet’s be clear right up front, I have no factual information backing this up and it is simply an editorial but it is something that has been bugging me since I saw that first Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag trailer. Was Assassin’s Creed 3 simply a stop gap before the real title was released?

This goes back to February last year when the Ubisoft reps first started talking about Assassin’s Creed 3. At that time it was being trumpeted as the best Assassin’s Creed ever with the most amazing graphics, story line and experience.

However as we got closer to the release instead of the marketing speak blowing up it actually started to get quieter behind the scenes. At no time was anything bad said about AC3 but that huge excitement just wasn’t really there anymore.

The only thing they were all still excited about were the ship battles and at Gamescom last year that is all we were allowed to see really.

So when Assassin’s Creed 3 was finally released and it didn’t quite live up to the initial hype I can’t say I was overly surprised.

But then when I saw that incredible Assassin’s Creed 4 trailer it immediately made me as excited as the Ubisoft reps over 12 months ago. And it is set with ships which makes the naval battles just that much more logical.

I personally always felt the naval battles never really fitted into the idea of the American Civil war. Sure the Boston Tea Party idea is quite strong, along with the battle for Chesapeake Bay –  but when I think Naval I think Napolean Bonaparte and the Battle of Trafalgar or, of course, Pirates.

So my conspiracy theory here is that they based Assassin’s Creed 3 around the ocean theme and when they realised they were going to miss their target they just threw together a new title with what they had lying around which would explain the meandering story and issues that Assassin’s Creed 3 had?

So is this just a massive conspiracy theory from a mad man or possibly based in fact? Ubisoft will never tell.

Mmm, would they risk tarnishing the name of the IP? Not sure I buy it, would be a very silly thing to do, but then again EA added microcockactions to Dead Space 3, and smiled when doing it… *Goes to buy foil…

Hell yeah of course they would risk tarnishing IP. It’s all about deadlines and bucks. Look no further than the Aliens fiasco.

Someone will have to pretty much force me to play 4 after the horror of the end of 3.

I would laugh if the beginning of 4 retcons the whole of 3 as a dream sequence that never happened.

Never a dull moment with the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is there? Speaking of franchises, I’m psyched for the Thief reboot! Apparently ‘THI4F’ is becoming yet another fresh reboot. Given the trend of things, I’m not quite surprised.. still, I have many fond memories of the previous games, so I can’t help but get excited over this! Here’s to hoping they don’t break the heart of a loyal Thief fan.

I’ve had my own suspicions. I know Ubisoft is inclined to bring out extra content or stories or expansions or whatever, but announcing an actual sequel basically right after AC3 is questionable. I’m playing AC3 now and Holy Pope does it bore me to tears.

Well I played a little of AC3 and if I piece this together with the game your theory does not seem so farfetched.
I am truly glad that Ubisoft has uplifted the series as it was getting a little dull.AC4 has me excited again.

it was also weird that they jumped to another numbered title right away. In all honesty it just feels like milking to me

Would confirm my feeling that the only interesting character, Connors dad Haythem, was supposed to be the main character. Especially since the new guy has the same last name.

Thus far, this is officially the best news I’ve heard for 2013. Give me more Garrett and I’ll be content. That is all.
