Watch Dogs is gold, but your reputation might not be

Just two weeks before the game is set to be released, Ubisoft has announced that Watch Dogs has gone gold. that gives them very little time to manufacture and ship the thing all over the world – unless of course it’s already on discs, and will be subject to a large day one patch. That would not be at all surprising.

"It’s exciting to be gold," creative director Jonathan Morin said on the UbiBlog. "But it’ll be more exciting when people are playing. For the fans it means that it’s true. It means there will be no such thing as another delay. But for us, it’s not done until they actually have it in their hands."

They’ve also detailed the game’s reputation system, which is how citizens of the game’s digital Chicago will react to your presence.

“The reputation system isn’t really a good-versus-bad kind of system," lead writer Kevin Shortt said. "We really wanted it to just be the citizens reflecting back on you and what you’re doing so that you think about it more. The game doesn’t suddenly tilt one way if you get a bad reputation. It doesn’t make it exponentially harder. It should just make you consider your actions and what you’re doing."

If you’re generally a bit of a jerk, citizens will have no beef in calling the cops on you should they see you getting up to no good. conversely, they might turn a blind eye to your brand of vigilante justice if they see you as beneficial.

Here’s the game’s latest CGI trailer, showing you why you should care. the game was meant to launch with the new consoles but saw a significant delay. No more delays though; we’ll be playing it in two weeks.

    “gone gold” lol
Awaiting countless patches and day one updates.
Gone are the days when gone gold meant FINISHED and it works fully to our intended vision.

Instead it means. RUSHED TO MARKET and the suits deadline was met. We can fix it later.

Now gold literally means the coating of the toilet that’s paid for by preorders.

Maybe Gold means it’s time for the investors to cash-in. On the flip side it means the game is ready for patching

Shady ethics as in what? I’m a developer, I know that deadlines are tough to meet and software is becoming more and more complex. What is more, the demand for more games sooner is increasing.

We are the consumers!! I don’t give a shit about a deadline, I buy something and I expect it to work!! I didn’t make the deadline but I am the ass who is paying money for the product!! If they keep on screwing around they will find us not so forgiving and accepting and then the money train will run dry!!!

If you guys are SO jaded and pissed off with the industry, then the answer is simple. Stop supporting it. Instead I come on this site each day and all I see is non-stop bitching and moaning. Honestly I’m really not all that fussed about spending 20 minutes download a patch when I buy a new game. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

          • Jonah Cash

            May 15, 2014 at 15:16

Yes that is the point it doesn’t bother you, but surely you can see that it is something that will bother other people?!? This is what is wrong with humanity of 2014, we don’t care for other peoples views or opinions no matter if they are valid or not. We have our own opinion and to hell with everyone else’s!!!

            May 15, 2014 at 15:17

Well you see I think you are wrong there. It doesn’t really actually
bother people. If it did they would stop supporting it. People just
love to bitch and moan. It’s the human way in 2014.

            May 15, 2014 at 15:19

But do you not see that most of the guys on here have already left the consoles for PC’s?? And they are buying games on steam sales for next to nothing in less than a year of release? And yes the developer still makes money out of them but would they not make more if their games were complete to begin with or didn’t need fixing after it was sold!!??

And if the bitching and moaning is irritating you that much, why do you come back each day?

Yes I’m pissed off about the industry, hence why I support games that do not follow that business model

holding out hope that I can get a nice bit of conversation in with other
gamers. Instead I find the same thing on repeat:
            a) Big bad gaming industry out to get everyone.
            b) Hate DLC.
            c) Hate day one patch.
            d) Games cost a fortune.
            etc etc
No one ever has anything positive to say.

“No one ever has anything positive to say”

I urge you to read more then, since there are a helluva lot more positives than negatives.

            As for your other points:
            A.) Not all of them
B.) DLC has become a cancer in gaming, that’s a fact, nothing wrong with DLC that is worth the money
C.) Correct, why release something that people pre-order that does not work, yes I realise the developers are doing a damn fine job under time constraints, but then the publisher or people in charge should NOT ship an incomplete mess
            D) Only on console

As a teen I used to save up for 3 months to be able to afford 1 game. Now I can buy whatever I feel like whenever. Yes games seem more expensive if you look at the actual numbers historically, but when you factor in inflation they say that nowadays games are cheaper then they ever were before.

            May 15, 2014 at 15:37

Yeah but the Rand is kicking us in the teeth!! And I can also buy any game I want and any console I want, but not everyone is as lucky as we are in actual fact I think we are definitely in the minority….

In consoles defense: the games are more expensive, but require less expensive hardware and does not need regular (every 2 years at least) hardware upgrades to look good. I had a gaming i5 pc with a gtx470 and within a year, my 360 looked better than what my pc could run. If you cant run a game maxed on the pc, it starts to look crappy. My opinion. My experience.

          • Admiral Chief in Space

            May 16, 2014 at 10:54

Regular hardware upgrades? Every 2 years?

            This old chestnut again.

            *sigh*

If you need to upgrade every 2 years, then you are doing it wrong my friend

          • Tulipdame

            May 16, 2014 at 12:05

Ok, understandable. But what if one can’t afford high end hardware that should last longer than that? I’m asking as one with little knowledge (rather than ranting that ‘consoles are better’ – I know PC’s can do MUCH more. Consoles are just a preference). I only used PC’s for about 3 years. But I prefer consoles.

          • Admiral Chief in Space

            May 16, 2014 at 12:16

Well, the high end hardware is overkill tbh, little more than midrange should keep you going.

I mean, my CPU is only now due for upgrade (been 5 years) but can still run all the latest games fine

          • Tulipdame

            May 16, 2014 at 12:40

Ok. In my experience, the pc games with lower setting looked worse than 360 games that are built with lower settings. But chances are, I decreased the wrong stuff to get good fraps. I don’t do pc gaming anymore. Even if I can use a controller, the consoles are just easier. I’m a noob by choice I guess. Lol

We love games. Its our favourite passtime. There are great games available. There are great games coming. The days before internet being cheaper were in a way better. We have great platforma to game on. Smartglass with Xbox One is cool (Dead Rising 3) and adds content – the app is universally available. Games are bloody expensive, but its ok to wait for the price to drop (I’d rather go without food in June than miss out on Watch Dogs- lol. No, seriously). Much positivity. Such game. Wow!

Who cant get patches and updates and then sit with a broken game? Rather delay it until it works properly. We also work hard and dish out a shit load of money. We have the right to expect it to work without additional effort.

          • Jonah Cash

            May 15, 2014 at 15:23

I have not for one moment thought or said that I think they screwed around for missing the first sales date on Watch Dogs, if anything I praised them for having the balls to say we won’t ship it because it is just not ready!! Like BF 4 should have and like Fifa 14 should have, neither of those games were right when they reached the consumer!! Fifa 14 was better after 3 patches!! That was a month and a half of me trying to play a game that didn’t work….. I will not buy Fifa 15 on release day, I am waiting for a month or two!!

          • Admiral Chief in Space

            May 15, 2014 at 15:24

Still, as a consumer, you are paying a premium for a day-one release that does NOT work

          • Jonah Cash

            May 15, 2014 at 15:26

And I will not get suckered into that trap again!! I will pay full price for Fifa 15 when the game has had 2 to 3 patches released, and then I will download them and hope that the game is fixed!! But what a terrible thing to have to say!! If my TV didn’t work I would just return the bloody thing, but us gamers we just suck it up because we actually love games!!

          • Kensei Seraph

            May 15, 2014 at 15:25

I agree with you but I’m trying to look at this from the view of the developers.

It’s one of the reasons I prefer to wait a few months and listen to the feedback before handing over my money.

          • Jonah Cash

            May 15, 2014 at 15:28

But I live from one big game to the next, I have no backlog to speak off!! I only like certain games and I am a AAA developers dream client, I buy the game day one…. But they are starting to force me to also wait a bit before I buy!! Luckily there are certain games that live up to the hype I have in my head for them, Infamous Second Son was well worth the pre order!! But that should not be the exception to the rule, but the rather the rule!!

As a general rule, I as a customer am under no obligation to understand a provider’s POV if they supply a defective product, especially since they will not show a similar type of consideration towards me. I understand accidents, mistakes & unforeseen things, I’ll forgive those provided they’re fixed in a timely manner. I don’t forgive knowingly broken.

            May 15, 2014 at 15:11

            This is a rant.
Although I understand what you are saying, I still don’t agree with it. Let’s look at an example. How would you like it if Audi made a vehicle and on the launch day 500 people get into car accidents because they didn’t have time to make the breaks work properly. I know, it is an extreme example, but the principle remians the same. Do you not think that it is because it became so easy to just update software afterwards that the software is incomplete? If it was impossible to update afterwards, would you spend more time making sure it works before you ship it?
            Rant over.

I get what you are saying, and I really wish it could always work that way, but deadlines are very important and sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to meet them. That is the kind of high pressure environment that software has become. Projects are often under-staffed and requirements are becoming more and more demanding. Clients/users don’t want to hear any of those excuses.

If there is a day 1 patch then from the gamers side there will be a delay but Ubisoft will consider it ‘done’ because “it is in their hands”.
