Watch guys hit each other really hard hey in this gameplay footage for UFC 2

Man, mixed martial arts sure has changed since the 1990s. I still remember watching the original UFC matches, on some imported VHS tapes years back when I was but a youth. Glitz! Glamour! The idea of certain martial arts being paired up and seeing which fight expert could withstand the most kicks to the face was something truly special.

It did of course lead to some truly memorable matches, such as Royce Gracie hugging everyone into submission, Ken Shamrock activating his god-mode cheats to crush his way through the ranks and Fred Ettish’s face becoming one with the elbow of Johnny Rhodes. Fast forward to today, and mixed martial arts is an entirely different beast.

Massively popular, it’s amazing to watch but it’s the kind of sport that I’d rather like to not test my face-to-foot style Kung-Fu in. Fortunately, there’s enough of a power fantasy available in the upcoming EA developed UFC game. EA detailed quick looks at the new gameplay, showing off the Knockout Physics System, Next-Level Submissions, and Dynamic Grappling systems with fighters Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor.

Check ‘em out below. In case the videos don’t work on your Chrome browser (which we’re trying to fix with hammers), I’ve hyperlinked the titles:

Knockout Physics System

Next-Level Submissions

Dynamic Grappling

Man, that looks eerily authentic. And painful. I’m getting my Fight Night 4 PTSD all over again, just watching those knuckles connect with faces.

  1. I can’t because the videos don’t work in Chrome, the site chows Firefox, and I don’t use IE.

I’ll entertain you with a quote:

“Thomas was connected to the internet for 12 seconds. And he had seen everything. He had seen the cats who couldn’t spell, he had heard of the arrow through the knee. He felt like there was this thing called cake, but that was a lie.”

But that’s because Thomas was alone.

I just hope this game plays better than the last EA UFC game. I loved the first two games. For any fan of the sport, the controls just made sense. Then came EA….

HA! Good old flash KO’s. My personal favourite was always the submission game. I used up a controller cranking that right stick! It was always such fun hearing my friends scream out “Not the kimura! Nooooo!”

good point, what happened to a running triangle and PLEASE bring back the wax on submissions. They need to bring back some arcade gameplay.

BUT because of on-line match making and making sure all moves are evened out, the game is ruined.

They can keep that silly shit like jumping cage kicks out. Nobody can pull them off anyway.

Yeah. I think they could develop the wax on submissions, although with the PS4 controller it would be more wax off 😛

tell me about it. The rubber came off a year ago. I have to wrap my thumbs in tape to get any traction. They dont make those sticks like they used to.

I think my hands would fall off without the stick rubber. As it is, I got blisters from playing this game (first one).

Same here. We ( @ov@ovgspacemonkey:disqus ) and I used to rock it. Loved the collision detection and the feeling of surprising someone who is dominating you!

            UNDISPUTED WAS BALLS TO WALL.

You never knew when the opponent would have the upper hand. If a standing fighter was unable to KO BJ Penn in the first round then we knew you were going to pull a rear naked choke in the 3rd. So the gameplan changed all of the time.

And thanks to the flash KOs, one would never spam kicks or punches when stamina was low.

AND LETS NOT FORGET PRIDE 🙂

It was a shame that the franchise had to change developers just as the sport was taking off. I dont even think they were allowed to use any Stock library from THQs voice recordings. It all had to start from scratch.

Which would explain why all the voice recordings were so lackluster with EA. I mean, really now, Joe Rogan is one of the busiest guys on the planet. He doesn’t have the time to just hop into the recording studio every time EA wants him to.

It was UFC that edged me to spend R7500 on a PS4. The game looked darn real. BUT, for some reason I did not have as much fun as I did in UFC 3. With its great single player centric rpgish type element.

Unfortunately EA went all on-line centric and the game needed numerous patches. As for the weak voice capture by Joe Rogan. It was horribly repeated and shallow. As for those repeated Dana White videos…

Im sorry. But UFC proved that graphics are not everything. THQ Yuke’s FTW!

I actually recall reading that Carlos Condit is going to be without his tattoo in this game. Apparently the tattoo artist wanted way too much by way of royalties for the use of the image.
