I’m proud to be a gamer, obviously. I am even proud to be a gamer who happens to have (awesome) boobs – call me a “girl gamer” if you must, but it’s still pretty awesome to be in a hot and desirable minority. However, we are a messed up group.

I’ve been reading about  Soul Sacrifice, and it reminds me of so many horribly depressing games! How about the old school Oregon Trail – life is hopeless and players can die of a host of causes including dysentery or snakebites. Or the multiple endings in Nier when you realize what you’re actually killing, but still can’t stop?

Plus, we have a ridiculous obsession with the apocalypse. I understand that it’s the easiest way to have a “new world” without involving space exploration, but really?! Zombies and aliens and nuclear fallout, oh my! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy some post-apocalyptic excitement, but there must be something psychologically wrong with us for playing such depressing games.

Or perhaps we are actually approaching life with our eyes open. Similar to the Neil Gaiman quotation:

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

Maybe we are all too aware of how fragile our existence truly is – this is just our way of expressing it, and preparing for the worst. At least the first time I shot a shotgun I was prepared – it is my favorite gun in Resident Evil games… although it is rather different in real life.

How about a game that is about Zombies after a nuclear fallout that was caused by Aliens? 😀

    Interesting viewpoint.

I generally play for escapism and the more detached from real life the better.

runs out of room far far away to another galaxy where the most popular AAA games are games like OKAMI. The milky way can keep its zombie on-line FPS murder simulators.

Much like the Aztec, who sacrificed their prisoners/slaves/etc/ before the sun set, I play because if I stop… our reality will cease to be. Thank your banana, that Banana Jim plays game for your existence.

On a seriaas note, you make an interesting observation. I would have to agree (Bleh) with Rants-a-lot… Games more often than not, allow us to escape from every day issues, and let you do what you potentially can never do in real life (Unless you don’t mind 25 – life for shooting the crap out of everything)

I for one do not consider it depressing, Game today lack any sort of real emotion. Nier was such a great experience, it had such heart and yes, it was pretty depressing, but if you look at the game, as a father , to what ends would you go to protect your daughter?
Ni No Kuni, your mother, the one that gave birth to you, cared for you…died for you; would you venture into a new world to save her?
Dead Space 2 was utterly amazing in the way it showed Issac’s conflict with his dead girlfriend
I would prefer these type of games to the cookie cutter stories of today.
Sure we are fragile being but these games makes us question our morals and who we are. These video games are life lessons, and you don’t actually realize that you are learning something while playing

As much as I think the game is over hyped and dated, I will vouch for Final Fantasy 7 and its deep toa buddhist gia undertones. DAM that shit was mature and kids played it. Unlike the kids games we get for kiddies these days.

that game is insanely over hyped, but I love it just as much.It was very mature, It was amazing for it’s time. It dealt with so much real life things, death, love, politics, religion, honor, friendships, growing old and your dreams (poor cid, lol). I agree, kiddies games these days are so detrimental to the kids’ brain. I don’t think it teaches them anything at all …. My kids will never play COD

I will throw in Spec Ops: The Line as well. Man that game left me gutted after that white phosphorus stage. This is truly the only game where I felt like a complete ass for killing everything in front of me. The other games really doesn’t let me think much about my actions because in the end you still going to get your, green, blue or red ending.

I have a special place for Post Apocalyptic games. The Fallout series being one of my favourites. For me the appeal lies at the idea that the world has pressed the reset button and everything starts over.

Pneh, I view gaming as future life training.

When the zombie apocolypse comes, I’m ready.
    When aliens invade, I’m ready.
When dragons come to town, I’m ready.
When all the surgeons are gone, I’m ready.

Only problem is, all this training is killing my figure.
