We are only using 30% of the PS3’s power

Drakes Fortune

So who should we believe here? Kojima has said before that he thinks he is using virtually 100% of the PS3’s power in MGS4 while the developers over at Naughty Dog think they are only using about 30-40% of the power of the black beast.

Apparently the most important part of developing for the PS3 is to get the slightly less powerful GPU to farm out the work to those 6 other SPU’s.

So we have the most hyped PS3 game in history (MGS4) saying it is as good as it gets compared to the most critically acclaimed (and way more entertaining) Uncharted: Drakes Fortune saying that they are only just touching the power of the PS3.

I think I’ll hang my coat on the side of entertainment and agree that so far we haven’t seen anything use more than 40% of the PS3’s power and there are only better things to come.

Didnt Kojima say that they had pushed it to its limits in terms of how they know how but that they are still trying to learn how to really make the code work?

Yes,in efficiency they may be using 30-40% of its power.but the PS3 is alot like driving a Ferrari F60 in peak traffic in the middle of Joburg! ! All that power,it could get to 300.but,whats the chances with all that traffic? Things like memory bandwitdh restrict it. Yes,it has 256mb ram + 256mb ram, but if their sending and recieving info at a different rate.it becomes just another problem.

If PS3 games don’t get any better looking than MGS4 and Uncharted then i’ll still be satisfied. 2 truly magnificent looking games.

But going on history, the PS2 best looking titles only came out much later in it’s cycle. I’ll be that will be the same with the PS3. Already there is big talk about how good Heavy Rain looks, then there’s the *promise* of Killzone2 and GoW3 is coming. So we’ll be tasting that pudding soon.

Yeah like we as humans are only using 10% of our brains, I’m sure the PS 3 is being used to the best of it’s abilities. It still looks good and once the code gets refined I’m sure there will be better looking games coming. Same as the 360, look at Gears of War compared to Gears of War 2?
Both consoles have got a bit more leg room in them.

How do they know if they are just using 30% of it’s power? How did they arrive at 30%? What is 100%? I’m a bit sceptical when devs say they are using x amount of the PS3’s capabilities as it seems like a rough estimate.
The question is will they ever reach 100% or come close to it? There is a lot of stories about the PS3’s power being locked away so we’ll probably have to wait and see.

    💡 They are probably only using 2 SPU’s 😉

I concur with the brain statement.

    Look at the human lung.
Yes we have a potential 100%, it can never be reached.

With training and hardwork you can add a few %’s to your lungs etc, and that makes a huge difference in performance, but you will never get to 100%.

If Drakes is at 30 % then 35 % will be brilliant and 40 % will blow your socks further away.

I doubt that MGS 4 goes anywhere near 100%. The game is very good on the eye, but the IA is weak and the contant installs take away from the total immersion.

GTA4 on the 360, with no installs at all is a bigger technical feat to me than MGS4 can ever be.

The question is, will the PS3 peak before the next generation of consoles?

I can see the 360 peaking next year of there after on the graphics front, and that is fine, since the next xbox is then only a year or two away, but will the PS3 prove itself as a gaming console, utilised to its full potential, before then?

As a bluray player it is cheap. As a gaming monster it is not that great a deal yet.
