We Happy Few could be the next BioShock

Contrast was one of the first games offered up on PS Plus for PS4, and it really didn’t impress. While developers Compulsion Games nailed the atmosphere, the controls were floaty and made the game an absolute chore to just play. The studio’s next game has nothing to do with Contrast, and that’s probably a good thing. That, and the fact that We Happy Few has an atmosphere as creepy as BioShock.

The first trailer for We Happy People has been revealed, after Compulsion teased their new title a few weeks ago. Set in a drug-fuelled, alternative version of Wellington Wells in the 60s, the first look hit home the type of atmosphere the game is trying to convey. It immediately gives off very BioShock-like vibes, with a news anchor reminding people to “do what they’re meant to do”. It seems that the population of Wellington Wells is living in a drug-induced sense of cheerful denial, and basically attacking anyone that tries to remind them of the real word.

While Contrast was primarily a platformer, We Happy Few looks like it could end up being a brutal, melee focused FPS, much like Dead Island and Dying Light. The game is being officially debuted next week, so we’ll know for sure then. But the way the lead character picks up a cricket bat and then gets attacked with a frying pan probably isn’t in there by chance.

It’s only the first look at a game we know very little about, but this short teaser was more than enough to focus my attention on Compulsion’s next outing. Games with creepy atmospheres like this excite me, and it’s the reason why BioShock is still so highly praised today. If there game is anything like this first look, We Happy Few could be something special.

I call copyright infringement! I see another not-so-pleasant-face-mask-Jack-like-criminal! Slightly rainy? THERE WAS NO RAIN! WHERE IS IT? WHERE IS IT?
