Assassin’s Creed is once again hitting our consoles later this year, in the form of a proper sequel that looks set to reinvigorate the franchise, bringing the annual expansion-games to a close. Well, at least for now, anyway.
Once again, we’re going back in time to relive the years of one as an ancestor of Desmond Miles, as he prepares to to once again embark on an adventure of extreme animus-sitting, with the perils of improper lower-back support possibly returning to menace him.
While we’re used to playing out history through Desmond as a medium, it seems that his story will never ever find an end, as each iteration of the popular franchise prefers to use him as a story-telling plot device instead of an actual character to play with, something that the Assassin’s Creed writers are well aware of.
Speaking to Gameinformer in a video interview, writer Corey May remarked that in “A perfect world, we will be able to conclude his story. He will take his place amongst the other major characters in our universe, as someone who is referenced and alluded to”.
This is bigger than just Desmond. We owe it to the fans, especially those who would like to see something a little bit new and different in that space, to start to branch out. At the same time, I’d like to at least finish what we started, so he deserves a conclusion, a resolution.
While it would be convenient for Ubisoft to utilise Desmond as a shortcut in order to tell more stories, it is kind of getting old. Dedicated fans have been waiting for Desmond to take up the assassinating mantle that he was born and trained to do, and it is about time that he finally gets his ass out of the animus.
