We’ve decided to improve the narrative for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is out. Hooray! Champagne and caviar for everyone at Square Enix in charge of the microtransactions, while the unsung heroes of Eidos Montreal get to share a pizza. There’s a lot to be said about the latest Deus Ex game, ideas and themes that need to be unpacked for a title that deals heavily in a marketing language of “mechanical apartheid” and “Aug Lives Matter”.

There’s some sensitive material at play here, material that cannot be ignored at all. And it’s all handled with the tact of a cybernetic bull in a China shop at times. Nowhere is that idea more prevalent than in the opening scenes when (SPOILERS MASSIVE SPOILERS I DIDN’T ASK FOR SPOILERS!) when Adam Jensen barely survives a train station bombing in Prague.

The station is gutted, people are dead and one lone child desperately claws at the rubble in a futile attempt to dig his mom out of her concrete grave. Jensen of course arrives to help, but it’s too late. A child is orphaned, Jensen is left with more questions and just one response that makes absolute sense to him: Insta-shades.

Well alright then. It’s bit of a tactless piece of narrative that’ll quickly be forgotten about in the days to come. But at the same time, we also decided that we could easily improve on it:
