What? A PS3 site thinks a magazine is biased towards 360? No Way!

Someone’s a little sour.

A PS3 gaming site called playthree.net has posted an article titled “CVG: GTA IV Xbox DLC will be bigger than San Andreas ” complaining about CVG magazines new GTA IV Special (sponsored by Microsoft), saying “What stands out is their blatant lust for the Xbox 360 version over the PlayStation 3 version. Why? Because of the Downloadable Content of course”.

I really feel that at this point I need to mention that if we all lived in upside-down-land, where Sony had secured the DLC to GTA IV and sponsored a CVG special, that playthree.net’s article would have been something along the lines of “Awesome CVG GTA IV Special Discusses PS3 exclusive DLC!”.

Right then, what the heck are they on about? Here’s the 411.

CVG’s new special says that the DLC is not going to only be your standard additional missions or vehicles, but might rather be a sizeable extension of the games real-estate as well.

“DLC so far has meant the odd new car, jumper of bit of horse armour, but GTA IV is set to completely redefine the idea with expansions that are to GTA IV what Vice City or San Andreas were GTA III. Yes, Rockstar is clearly hinting at new downloadable cities; and the chances of them being London, Vice City or SA again are slim to none. So that’s new as in brand new. GTA IV’s Liberty City is the beginning. Think about that and be excited.”

The guys from playthree.net then go on to say “What should be noted is that this special edition magazine has been sponsored by Microsoft. There are advertisements for the Xbox 360 edition of GTA IV (with DLC) as well as other 360 games including Ninja Gaiden II and Lost Odyssey.”

Come on. These guys know for a fact that the exclusive DLC makes the 360 version of GTA IV look more appealing than the PS3 version, keeping in mind that the game is going to retail at the same price on both platforms. If only one console existed, and you had the choice between two equally priced games, identical, except that one would have access to DLC and the other one couldn’t, which one would you be putting on the checkout counter?

Some sites are saying that the idea of creating DLC that large isn’t even feasible and that it’s nothing but a rumour manifested by CVG, especially since the DLC will already be available in the Autumn (Spring on our side of the world). Maybe, maybe not. Conspiracy theories aside, why would CVG try and pull a stunt like that when Microsoft are the ones sponsoring the special and are aware of it’s content?

And if we all took a trip back to the previously mentioned upside-down-land, I’m sure that there would be a 360 news site making the same sour comments.

So then, what playthree.net is trying to say here is that CVG prefers the 360 version over the PS3 version because it’s going to have additional content available?

Heck, I don’t blame them, sounds pretty straightforward to me.

  1. I see this is yet another publication with exclusive 360 GTA IV advertising….

    It’s becoming a trend this..

As for the story itself I have to agree, complaining about the 360 DLC is really just being bitter.

Content like that is quite possible. I mean, you can download whole XBox games of 6GB through Live, why wouldn’t it be possible to have down downloadable content that big.

It’s not smart or feasible (for us)… but then again, when did anyone worry about 3rd world countries, with less than operational “broadband” internet.

Some PS3 supporters are thinking the whole world are conspiring against them when a single article or blog is saying something pro-Xbox. It’s strange that I haven’t heard one PS3 fan say “Wow, I wish our version had DLC”, which is of course what they are thinking but not admitting. C’mon, who wouldn’t want extra content for their favorite game? 😉

Hey Lazy, I have an idea on a competition to run. What about Photoshop Phriday (thanks http://www.somethingawefull.com)? Readers of http://www.lazygamer.co.za send in photoshop images of a theme chosen by you like GTAIV, Console Wars, PS3 sux or something like that. The best one wins a sweet prize.

Yeah, there’s no way that the expansion is going to be bigger than San Andreas. Something like that would gp straight to retail because it would sell even more than GTAIV.

As far I know (can’t be bothered to look up trhe reference), Dan Houser already said that the content will be missions rather than a new city or island. This rumour about ‘bigger than San Andreas’ started several months ago on some Xbox 360 fan’s blogs after the blogger’s breakfast at GDC and he ended up retracting his comments.

I think if the DLC was anything that grand, we’d have heard more specifics from Microsoft by now. It’s probably going to be more along the lines of the Crackdown/ Mass Effect expansions than the Elder Scrolls Shivering Isles one.

It’s nice to have and it’s already a compelling reason to get the 360 version without fanboy types hyping it up to a level where it everyone will end up disappointed. A lot of the misunderstanding comes from the fact that people think Microsoft ‘gave’ Rockstar $50 million to make the content. No, they didn’t. They loaned them the money as a guarantee against sales of the DLC.

Abe, Microsoft never gvies anything to anyone for free. 😉 I’m betting on 1200 MS points, at least, considering how much Gears and Halo maps go for.

(Neither does Sony, really, but here we’re talking about Microsoft.)

Reports vary from it being 10 hours worth of Story (More than most free standing games these days) and entire downloadable Islands.

    How is that not Major?
… And $50 Million says you ain’t getting it. 😉

They just said it looks nicer to stop the PS3 fanboys from crying 😉 It was lead on the 360, ’nuff said.

I reckon it won’t be free. With DLC that large and MS paying $50 mil for it, Im sure they are going to be charging at least 1200 for the additional content, howerver, it sounds like it could be worth it.

LazySAGamer. Thanks for picking up on my story!

As a multi console owner Im actually going to get this on the Xbox 360 as I have a lot of real world friends who I will want to play GTA IV with online, and the DLC. I LOVE GTA.

My scepticism isn’t against the DLC. Its about CVG speculating whilst trying to pass it off as fact. The magazine is exclusively sponsored by Microsoft. A brand new city would require a profound investment of manhours and talents, eg game world architects etc. I dont think a new city could be crafted in 5 months time, and this is contrary to what Mr Houser himself said in the April issue of EDGE magazine. More likely, it will be new missions in Liberty City, which suits me fine.

    😀

    Hi Andronix,

This article was actually posted by Nick and approved by me 😉

The other side of this though is that Microsoft paid over that $50m a long time ago and this second smaller city could have been under development since way back when.

However what I personally see as more likely is that another section of the City will appear in the DLC or possibly an island of Liberty City.

Either way I do expect the DLC to be substantial but to be honest I am not sure I am even going to get it. I have been disappointed with all the previous DLC on games and don’t want to get my fingers burned again.

As for how we reported this article, we have a thing called Flamebait Friday where I instruct one of the guys to rwite an article and make it controversial to stir up debate. Your base article was the lucky recipient this week

    Hope you don’t mind

i think that Oblivion:Shivering Isles set a good benchmark for how big a DLC expansion can be. Definitely not the size of San Andreas! But big enough. I just hope they don’t try an charge us 2400 points like the did for Shivering Isles. I’ll gladly pay 1200 points for an expansion that big (30+ hours playtime)
