The biggest blockbuster video game release of the year is finally out, and many of you have been playing GTA V since yesterday, your glassy eyes fixed to the screen. I’ve been playing it for a bit, and if there’s one thing that’s struck me it’s the near-perfect recreation of the ideal of Los Angeles in the game’s fictional Los Santos.
The minutiae in the detail is incredible, and most of my time so far has been spent driving around soaking up the sights and sounds. It’s such a tangible, living, breathing digital world. I pretty much squealed when I saw the in-game “Up-n-Atom” burger, which is a parody version of one of my favourite L.A burger joints, In-N-Out.
I really can’t say much about the characters or the story yet – but I think I’m going to have a grand time with GTA V. It just seems a little more fun than GTA IV, a game I ended up hating.
The current Metacritic score for the game (360) is 98, tying it for second place along with GTA IV; just ahead of Super Mario Galaxy and just behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the N64, which is, and probably will forever be the highest rated video game of all time.
Without getting at all spoilery, tell US what you think of GTA V so far. I will, however, say that I’d really, really appreciate a PC version. The game looks amazing, but really could do with a better overall frame rate.

So far I am enjoying it. I have only played with 2 of the 3 characters. Still waiting for Trevor. The scale and detail is incredible. It’s fun just walking around and watching the people interact with each other. I even enjoyed playing tennis.

According to some comments on the interwebz it does drop to 20 fps on some occasions but mostly stick to the 30 fps that was the target.

Since I think no one bothered to answer, I think the framerates, judging by my eye alone probably range between 20-30, with a few dips and rises here and there and depends on what you are looking at at the time, but not what you would consider smooth at all, pretty as heck at times though.

You will notice the slight frame rate issue now and again and there is some pop up with a few objects but it doesnt detract from the game at all. Im playing on the 360 so don’t know how it is on the PS3.

It’s AWESOME. Did a couple of missions, played some golf, saw a movie. Went to the strip joint and got a lap dance. Then the option arose for a dance with two ladies at the same time! 0_o Loving how characters have unique abilities. Everything is so pretty to look at as well. The mini map works great with the new slanted view along with the GPS as well. Gun fights are still a breeze thanks to the cover system. Also the way you switch between characters on and off missions is seamless. Can’t wait to continue playing it

For realz with driving the zoom out feature this time is pretty much non existent. Half the time while driving I cant see the road or cars in front of me, and if I tilt my camera then I run off the road. Its a double whammy! Besides this I love everything about this game, but a patch with an extra level of zoom would be very nice

The story unfolds great.
The characters all have their up and downs, and, yes, Trevor is amazing and disturbing at the same time. Michael has that Tony Soprano vibe, and Franklin is cool and all, but is the blandest of the three.
Gameplay-wise I’m loving it. 35 % in and I’ve been exploring a lot.
The car-driving is NICE. Better than IV’s, and it’s something a lot of people is whining about, but it’s OK. It took me a couple of times to master it, but I haven’t enjoyed riding through a map this much since Red Dead Redemption.
All R* games combined = V
I’m saying it now: fanboys, don’t ruin the game. Digital Foundry released their always-biased article about which version is better, and even when they say that both are mostly the same, with the Xbox version running smoother, having better shadows and running at better fps, and the PS3 version having better ground textures and being more stable when there’s a lot of shit going on screen sometimes, and they chose the PS3 one. Of all they mentioned, I played both versions back to back and only noticed some pop-up on the Xbox one (no pun) and some lack of sharpness on some areas on the PS3. I really think DF is being biased like back when they said RDR’s better version was the Xbox one, while to this day I still think they were the SAME.
R* achieved something amazing, and it’s making the best possible game to run this smoothly on hardware so old… Let’s try to don’t fall for it and ruin it with stupid console wars. Enjoy the game, because I really believe that it’s a masterpiece, no matter on which console you’re playing it, you’ll have an amazing experience.

Put in about 5 hours last night (finally called it a night, against my better judgement, at around 1am this morning when I realised I had to be up at 6am so I could be at work at 7am for a meeting).
Honestly, at first, it didn’t grip me… **please don’t kill me!** It just didn’t ‘click’ for me. But then, as I progressed, it really began introducing me to the world. And what a world it is! The detail and sheer number of things to do is insane! I mean it even has a working, reacting to your input stock exchange! I’ve only just ‘unlocked’ Michael after 5 hours of playing… There is just SO much other stuff to do, you forget about the main storyline for a while.
It’s like being given your own, fully working and populated Cape Town / Joburg and saying, “Go nuts! Enjoy.” It’s just unbelievably cool!
Geoff, I’m with you – there were times last night I was simply just driving around, taking in the sites and finding new locations. The world is just incredible.

My question, and it’s the same question for every GTA game, how long does that charm last? How long until its just more of the same? How long until the initial charm wears off and you realise it’s just, not much to do thats actually still fun after the first 3 or 4 times you did it (activities).
This single thing has been my biggest issue with GTA games since 3. Its just, more of the same stuff that gets dull and tedious. Reminds me of your average MMO, just without the social aspect – which happens to be the main reason to do those monotonous other ‘activities’.
I’ll wait until PC version, by then I’ll see the longevity of this game, and the real opinions and facts will be out on the great wide web.

This is one of those special games where you do a double take when you see some tiny little nuance, simply walk around in awe at the special touches.
Like this one time at band camp… nah, I was just running across the road, off to steal a car and some dood drove past me and just flipped me the bird.
I was like “Damn, I would have totally done the same thing in real life”.
Now when I’m driving in real life I’m looking through GTA goggles, every car is a possible hijacking and pedestrians are just bumper-fodder. I did restrain myself on my way to work though.

Trevor is mental. Absolutely mental. Awesome character though. I’m gravitating towards Franklin as my favourite character, purely because he reminds me of CJ from San Andreas, and his interactions with Michael shows that he wants to learn.
As for the game itself… ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! hahahah I’m kidding, it’s awesome so far. I’m about 30%, and training Franklin and Michael in the art of flying at the flight school.

The classic “pulling out guns out of your ass” is kinda game breaking for a game that is filled with details and has the Realistic Ballistic Damage of Max Payne 3… it just feels out of place and silly… but i guess GTA is like that…
but the real issue here is that this Classic Move will make Multiplayer a mess… even more then GTA IV now that there’s alot of stuff to do Online.

this game was worth every cent i spent on it… @ 12.7% completed so far only got the game yesterday… Franklin and micheal are great characters to play with not forgetting chop the dog lol… loving the vehicles and details that went into this game thanks Rockstar… Job well done.
