One of the things I’m hoping to see at Microsoft conference is the brand new Gears of War from Black Tusk studios but at the same time I’m worried they are going to continue to get the spirit of the game wrong.
The original Gears of War is still one of the best games I’ve ever experienced with a fantastic single player campaign and a hugely addictive multiplayer.
However each iteration after that has been worse and worse with the single player campaigns really failing on the boss fights and the multiplayer moving more towards fast based action and run and gun instead of the tactical shooter that the first gears was.
And then while I enjoyed the single player of Judgement the decision to remove locusts from the multiplayer was mind boggling and unsurprisingly did not go down well.
So what can Black Tusk do to take the game back to its roots?
Well here is my simple wish list, let me know if you agree or not.
- Slow the multiplayer down.
- Large health bars and tactics to win
- Make sure that sniper still exists but is difficult to use and slow to reload
- Bring back Active Reload, seriously why was this taken out?
- Avoid vehicle battles, Gears of War is close and gory
- The story shouldn’t focus on Marcus, Dom and Cole
- We need a new team playing through the same timeline as before and intersecting the original story
- Lambents and Locusts are enough we don’t need new enemies. Just different versions
- Single player to follow the Call of Duty idea. Short missions with great fights
- Vastly improved boss battles
So that’s about it, I’ve also wondered about an open world Gears of War but I’m not sure that will work with the typical Gears of War weapons which I definitely wouldn’t want to see changed.

I want to see the end of Gears of war. Just like I want to see CoD end and also Halo.

Really? Gears and Halo are good games, CoD isn’t. I’m not really sure why you put them in the same boat?

Gears and Halo were good games …. actually Halo was never really good as there were loads of other titles that was better at the time. Gears is getting very watered down and it is time for it to retire.

I think it is down to the fact that Gears ended so flipping well with the 3rd game!! The story ended almost perfectly, if it was a movie there would and could never have been a fourth title as the story ENDED!!!! I loved the 3 games, the fourth one I didn’t even buy as the story was done….. Thus the 4th game was impossible and a 5th game is absurd!!

I suppose if you grew up playing Halo instead of good games then you are right. Rest of us who had access to great games will disagree. 😛

Hmmm OK – “grew up” is hard to say given I was roughly 30 at the time. But what in your opinion were better (at the time)? And lets exclude the master race (PC)…because then I might agree with you. But from a console perspective it did do some great things. And also showed developers that FPS could be done well on console.
It didn’t have to be pared back for “us” console gamers.
Are there any IPs now only on PC that are not console also? Can think of Stalker offhand.

Dammit you brought up PC and now I have no argument left as all my examples are PC based. Wait … no can’t think of non pc games. You win if we leave PC out of it but you know in your heart that PC rules all. 🙂

Like when Gavin drank the shot of Tabasco. Short. Not like Darryn with his spider webs and milk chugging. It gets drawn out.

Agreed, if CoD was an open world game, we’d have a lot less CoD fans, since attention span issues

Dunno, but what I do know is that I want another AAA 3d person action game in the 40k universe, with SPAAACEE MARRRINNESSS!!! arrrargghh for the EMPERROR!!
Was a good game (space marine), only a bit short and a bit (ok more than a bit in places) monotonous. So much potential : In no game ever have I felt more badass than when I hurtled into stacks of orcs with my jetpack and pulverized them with my daemon hammer…

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I loved the game, bought all of them on release. But 4 games is enough. It was nicely wrapped up in 3, just don’t think we need to revisit a game that has run its course.

A reboot would be nice new story setting and characters. Perhaps this time have a story that makes sense than just a flashy run and gun session. Oh and more girls wouldn’t hurt, instead of the usual sausage fest.

I actually don’t know what I want from another Gears title. I enjoyed the others…but is it a series that can sustain the epic-ness (ahem!) of a Halo, etc. In other words is the world big enough to have more games set in it. Personally not so sure…
But hey maybe they bring something totally leftfield into view.

Gears ended after 3, best three game series I have ever played!! The story was rapped up in a neat little bow. So there can’t be a 4th title, let alone a 5th… I heard there was a 4th title but I just wrote that off as a hoax!!

May 12, 2014 at 15:25
Does that make Mass Effect 4 a crazy idea – I haven’t played them yet, but by all accounts 3 ended the trilogy as well? It would appear a lot of people are keen on a 4th though.
So IF ME3 did end so “well” (let’s put aside issues with the Bioware original ending) what allows 4 to be expanded on? Is it the setting, other universes, etc? As my point below says – I don’t think the Gears universe allows/allowed for much in the way of expansion some some franchises can.

Wut? The multiplayer for the first Gears was a run and gun game. If anything, Epic Games attempted to make Gears 2 more tactical, but the online was riddled with problems, and players still ran around with a Gnasher. And Gears 3 was like a mix if Gears 1 and 2 with lots of stopping power. Judgment’s online could have been better, but like with Gears 2, multiplayer was messy (with the exception of Overrun).

i agree they should either have the story in a different point of view such as a new team or a young marcus, kind of do a prequel. like take place during the pendulum wars or how he met dom

Has this guy ever played Gears?… Gears 1 multiplayer was very quick and the only gun ever used was a gnashed to grab the power weapons. Gears 2 decreased the speed and was much more tactical than Gears 1. Gears 2 was probably the best Gears for multiplayer. Gears 3 was fast, intense, and a mod-fest. Judgment was a mistake that should have been aborted.
I hate how people call themselves diehard fans and have probably spent less than 2 months playing the games. Diehard fans are still playing Gears 1, 2, and 3. The fans that play Judgment for the most part were bad at the previous games.
