Gaming is going through a rather interesting trend at the moment. Gone are the days of classic games getting the HD treatment. Instead, we have modern and barely new HD games getting some extra oomph in remastered editions. What if this trend was reversed, and developers purposefully took some of their franchises back to “the good ol’ days”?
Gamers over at Neogaf have taken this concept into their own hands. There’s quite a handful of screenshots and redone box art, but I’ve just picked a few of my favourites. Can you guess what they are? They are simple for the most part, but I have left all the answers below just in case.

For us older generation of gamers this would be brilliant. But we dont live in such a world. We live in a world where gamers of today like to bitch and moan about how every game developing company owes them everything.

9/10 – Screw FF
Been messing around with some old school Quake and Quake 2 for an upcoming retro LAN. Found some very pretty cool mods for them that keep the gameplay feel intact.
You can change the music to the original NIN Quake soundtrack and set the original sounds back (which I did). Also you can pretty much drop a lot of the extra colour if you’re more of a purist. Still pure adrenaline to play.
Dude in this vid isn’t too good (“do you even +mlook buddy?”) but you’ll get the idea.
Quake 2 has Beserker Mod which is also a pretty cool graphical update and offers things like faster rockets (Q1 speed). Now if I can just find the setting for my old school rail spiral…

It is still awesome if a bit slower than I remember and the Super Nailgun chows too much ammo. With the new mod you can actually see the nails in the surfaces after firing them. I thought that was pretty cool.

Uninteresting tidbit. The doom 3 screenshot is the game actually running on a Voodoo 2 graphics card and manages to make the game look like a half decent Quake 2. :>
