Whispers of the Old Gods

Have you heard? There have been rumours, utterances, and even whispers that the old gods are coming to Hearthstone…

I am of course, referring to the upcoming expansion. Whispers of the Old Gods is on its way, and it’s bringing with it a whole lot of new cards to the table.

What are its origins though? Who the hell are the old gods anyway? Here’s a brief overview of their lore

I often forget that despite it being a card game, Hearthstone has a whole lot of history behind it. All of the cards have been plucked from the world of Warcraft, and have some or other story behind them. One key figure coming with this expansion for example, as illustrated in the video above, is C’Thun.

C'Thun C’Thun is basically a gigantic eyeball on a bed of the evillest pasta imaginable. Also tentacle eyebeams. And terror. And dread whispers that infest your imagination. In addition to having a name that is pronounced incorrectly in many different ways (hint: Kuh-THOON), C’Thun may be the most famous of the Old Gods.

You may look at that card and think it’s not that great. I mean, 10 mana for a 6/6 god? Sure, there’s the battlecry that deals a bunch of randomly split damage, but the card itself isn’t anything special.

At least, not in its default form. There are other cards, followers of C’Thun, that can go about buffing the god and granting bonuses to the player. Here are some examples:

Beckoner of Evil Twilight Elder Shieldbearer

C’Thun’s mortal cultists are some of the best in the business! Old Gods might not pay well, but the benefits can be great. Most of C’Thun’s devoted followers—16 in all—offer a direct buff to C’Thun when played. It’s not all volunteer work either; the more powerful C’Thun becomes, the greater the potential reward—it’s a squid-pro-quo kind of thing.

So the idea is to spend some rounds buffing C’Thun before playing it. At which point, yes, it is then a very, very powerful card.

Which of course, can be reduced to a harmless 1/1 sheep by the Mage’s polymorph, or murdered with ease by the Assassins assassinate card. Hearthstone is full of counters like that which brings me to tears. I can’t imagine anything worse than spending an entire game buffing up a C’Thun, only to have it destroyed within the blink of an eye.

I’m a big Hearthstone noob though, so what do I know? I’m sure better players have big plans for C’Thun, and the rest of the cards that’ll come with Whispers of the Old Gods. Speaking of which, more have been unveiled over on Hearthstones Facebook Page. Here’s an overview of all the revealed cards thus far, including those shown above:

Klaxxi Polluted Hoarder Giant Sand Worm

Eater of secrets Doomsayer Doom of Elwynn

Darkness C'Thun Corrupted Healbot

Twilight Elder Shieldbearer Beckoner of Evil

You may notice some very familiar old faces. They unfortunately, have succumbed to C’Thun, and thus, play a little differently to their uncorrupted counterparts.

Are you excited for the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion? I sure am – I’ve been saving up as much gold as I can in preparation!

  1. I like the secret eater and the new doomsayer but that’s about it. It’s too easy to take out such a big buffed card that I don’t think it’s worth it

Ah, imagine the righteousness of playing a Eater of Secrets after that pesky secret pally plays Mysterious Challenger :D, gone are all his secrets and you sit with a 7/9 body for 4 mana (at best).
