When are Xbox 360 and PS3 prices dropping?

The price is WRONG, Bitch!

With the new generation of consoles out now, it’s a safe bet to assume that the prices of the older ones are set to drop soon. They’d be a great purchase for somebody – say a PC gamer -  who’s always wanted some of the exclusive games, or people new to the world of videogames. When are they going to get cheaper?

According to analyst and soothsayer Michael Pachter, we could see a US price drop as earlier as February, with the lower prices to trickle down to the rest of the world soon thereafter. and the impetus for that price cut will come from game publishers.

“I think the publishers are going to threaten the manufacturers, and they’re going to say ‘cut the price of the PS3 and the Xbox 360, now.’” Pachter says in the latest episode of GameTrailers panel show Bonus Round. “So my bet is: February, price cut happening, because I actually think the publishers are gonna threaten to not support the PS3 and 360 this Holiday – Holiday ’14 – if they don’t see a price cut quick.”

He believes that platform holders could cut prices and and still make money – and that there’s a large, untapped market of gamers still playing on PS2’s and Wii’s who could upgrade to newer systems. Plus, there’s a whole, nearly 10-year long  library of fantastic games to play, most of which could be picked up pretty cheaply right now.

“The good news is: Microsoft can cut to $199 in a heart beat and they won’t lose any money … I mean it’ll cost their profit. And Sony can do the same, they both have manufacturing down there, and I think that’s great for consumers. There are still a hundred million Wii owners out there, probably three quarters of whom have never considered owning a PS3 or a Xbox 360. I think that’s a good opportunity for ten million or more of them to trade up, so that’ll be good.”

Those of you who don’t own consoles, or those who only have just the one; would you consider getting a PS3 or Xbox 360 if the price came down?

Last of Us, Uncharted, MGS4, GT5, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet…
      Far better exclusives than Microsoft.

I don’t know, maybe if there was a crazy special & they were going for R1k. Otherwise I wouldn’t really be that interested. Don’t really see the point in buying a console for only 5/6 games, plus I have a massive games backlog anyway. I don’t need to add more.

I was really interested in this article until I got to “According to analyst and soothsayer Michael Pachter…”

However. I do hope the prices drop. I would love to play all the God of War games (Only played nr1) and Last of Us. Maybe even some Uncharted.

Not sure everyone dislike Pachter. As an analyst he calls it as he sees it – he is in the business of advising his clients (i.e. investors). Gamers are not his stock in trade.

And if you follow his weekly interlude on Gametrailers you will see he actually does like games; but is obviously far more interested in the business side of things.

He even admits he doesn’t quite understand why gamers even listen to him – he isn’t talking to them to start off with. His sole job is to advise which gaming companies to invest in/get out from.

Saying all that I think he does a great job discussing the financial factors in gaming industry – some say the biggest entertainment industry in the world! Sure he gets it wrong, but he has his ears to the ground and gets as much right/close.

I personally wouldn’t mind getting the 250gb Xbox 360 and a PS3… then I’d be sorted console wise… I HAD a Wii, but I’m good without Mario in my life atm.

My daughter is moving in 4 months and she’s taking her xbox 360 with her. I have xbox games of assassin’s creed and Dead Island I haven’t played yet and just had a birthday and got AC2, Brotherhood, Revelations. I need to buy my own xbox 360. I am 51 and still love video games on my days off after I do all of my cleaning (live in a small apartment, so, there isn’t much cleaning), laundry ( takes 3 hours at the Launder-O-Mat) and shopping. I like video games that make you think and calculate. I take my time to figure out my moves so I wont get caught by the enemy or zombie, but I don’t play video games constantly; I also read books, go to the gym to workout, walk for health.
When there is an xbox 360 being sold as used. My capped out limit to spent is $260,00. So, I may look at used, but I can’t shake the ‘electronic issue’ thought. I Had problems with buying used and that is why I am leery. This November/December 204 AC5 will be released and I will be the first to purchase it. As far as I know info from Ubisoft, it will be set in France during the french revolution and the fall of king Louis XVI, they might include an extension into parts of Russia.
