Bloodborne 20

Bloodborne has released and is getting a ton of praise. As a PS4 exclusive, many people are wondering if this is a reason to buy the console. Of course, it takes more than one exclusive to ship a console, so here’re all the ones that have been released and gotten love.

Just to be clear, these are games that are exclusive only to one console. To be fair to Xbox and its PC friendly ideology, I will also include their games that were released on PC as well. I’m using Metacritic because I need to compare numbers and unfortunately really well considered and written reviews simply aren’t going to help us with this.

9+ scores

  • Wii U (4) – Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Bayonetta 2, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • PS4 (2) – The Last of Us Remastered, Bloodborne
  • Xbox One (0)

Very well done for Wii U, although it should be considered that almost all their titles are exclusives. PS4 also has a couple games of 9 and up. Unfortunately, Xbox does not have a single exclusive in that range with only titles such as GTA V and Rayman Legends getting such high scores on the platform – which is the same across Wii U and PS4 as well.

When you move into the 8 range, it becomes a much more muddy affair. Numerous games are available on PC, handheld and other platforms. This is where PS4 favourites like Resogun, Helldivers, Velocity 2X and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth make appearances, just as Xbox One shines with titles such as Forza Horizon 2, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Sunset Overdrive. The Wii U also has some appearances in the 8 range, such as Mario Kart, Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Of course, there is much more than score that goes into considering which console is best. Can it also play third party titles? If that’s your concern, the Wii U is probably disqualified. However, if all you’re looking for is which console has the best exclusives, we have to give it to the Wii U, followed by the PS4 with the Xbox One coming in last on this front. Of course, that all might change with the release of Quantum Break and the timed exclusive launch of Tomb Raider.

Bloodborne looks fantastic and the high metacritic scores it got finally might have pushed PS4’s ave metacritic score above that of the Xbox One (The Order gave it a HUGE blow and PS4 ave was sitting at 66% compared to Xbox One’s 69% ave before Bloodborne’s release if I remember correctly?)

Ori is in that 8 range. Love the game, but not many people will buy the console purely for Ori.

If it means I don’t need to buy a console to be able to play a specific game because it’s on PC, then in my opinion: yes 🙂

The author of the article does state that for the purposes of this article that a console exclusive on pc does count as most of Microsoft’s exclusives are on PC. The key word here is console exclusive. If a Micosoft exclusive comes to pc it can only be considered as a positive thing. Yes, maybe they will miss out on selling a few consoles but they are still generating revenue from game sales. Everybody wins. Sony should really consider doing this more, Valkyrie Chronicles aside. Sorry, forgot that was Sega.

I still don’t think that this is how one should chose which console to get… I for one have no interest in Bloodborne, it is just not my thing… I have an interest in Gears, but that ended nicely at 3 so that is done. Uncharted can bring out 10 more and I would probably play them but I get the feeling that they want to finish off Drake’s story with 4…
PS I am busy downloading my first PC game in 15 odd years… I decided that I will play Mass Effect for the first time!!

Well then in that case, if we are basing exclusivity on what the article said, then the reason it’s not there is because it didn’t hit the 9+ score (as some others said).

Still think it’s an awesome game though… in my opinion should be in the 9+ scores too.

            March 27, 2015 at 11:14

The further problem could be that there might just be too many in the 8’s to mention everyone. I’m way to lazy to see if that is the case though.

I’d still go PS4… I only half regret getting my Xbox 360… which now has a dying hard drive, and it’s a damn awful mission to get a hard drive in South Africa. I could import one, but it’ll cost me the price of a 500GB Xbox 360S. #LOL

At least I’d be able to go to one of my suppliers, buy a drive and pop it into my PS3 if I had this issue. This is the only issue I have with the 360.

Bloodborne is a fantastic game but I dont think it’s a system seller. If my local BT is anything to go by, every second or third who buys the Bloodborne PS4 bundle wants to trade the game back in. The game is simply not accessible for the masses ( amazing as it is). I see a lot of PS4 owners buying Bloodborne because it’s something new but will not be playing it for long. Bloodborne is not like Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, Halo, Gears of War, Mario, Pokemon, etc. here people can just have fun without worrying where the next checkpoint is. They are easy to get into and almost anyone can play them. Add to the fact that they are great games and universally loved, that’s why they are system sellers. Bloodborne is a new IP and has a lot to proove. Maybe the sequel will reach that status as a system seller . Only time will tell.

Bloodborne is a system seller. Even though it’s a new IP, it’s pedigree speaks for itself. It may not move consoles like Halo or Zelda, but there will definitely be a spike in console sales thanks to this title.

Possibly yes, but for how long? Is it the only reason why those people bought the console? The PS4 has being a sales behemoth regardless of the games released so far. Like I said, only time will tell. I am thoroughly enjoying Bloodborne as we speak, I just don’t think that the game has the mass appeal and accessibility to be a massive console seller.

            March 28, 2015 at 17:47

I know that my particular experience may not be indicative of sales performance on a larger scale, but I purchased a PS4 specifically for Bloodborne as did several people I know.

            March 28, 2015 at 18:10

As is possibly the case with most current PS4 purchasers. I also know for a fact that the 3 BT Games branches closest to me has had an influx of the bundled Bloodborne being traded back to them as the game simply didn’t appeal to the people who bought the bundle. I am actually curious to see what BT is going to sell those preowned copies for. Propably R50 less than the new price.

Good news for me I guess. Definitely want to get the game, but I have so many games I want to buy that 2nd had bloodborne is appealing to me. Hopefully its at a good second hand price. Not in the mood to fork out R700 for a second hand game when I can just get it for R800 brand new.

I have both PS4 and XBOX One, and i have to say with my game tastes I prefer Xbox One exclusives so far. Played last of us on last gen and bloodborne isn’t my sort if game. I loved Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2, huge fan of Halo, so bought MCC and will buy 5. News if flowing out about another of my favs GOW, and then you have quantum break. What an idiotic article. The exclusives are MICROSOFT exclusives. They are still exclusives to Microsoft, cthus can be found on PC. To say otherwise is like saying an exclusive on PS4 is not an exclusive because it can be on Vita. Or Last Of Us is not a PS4 Exclusive because its on PS3. Point is, do people no realize Microsoft is trying to make it where you can play Microsoft games on just about everything? So I guess Microsoft will never have exclusives.

Today, an exclusive means it can not be played on the other system not owned by that company. In other words, just about every game that is Microsoft exclusive will be on PC with Windows 10.
