Why I didn't get to play Final Fantasy XIV: Realm Reborn again

As I told you, I enjoyed playing the beta for FFXIV: Realm Reborn.  It’s fun, addictive, and beautiful. Unfortunately, I also told you about the issues with Square Enix’s account management and communication. Yeah, well, they haven’t seemed to learn anything.

Last week Wednesday I received this email:

Now, slight problem here – I’ve been playing the beta on my PS3. Oh well, just some bad admin, I figured, still excited to get playing. The days and dates didn’t make sense, though. But, lo and behold, a new email came in the very next day:

Awesome!  So I’d have the whole weekend to play! Of course, I had plans on Friday night and Saturday morning, but at least I’d get some hands-on time with FFXIV again. I was excited.

Due to an extra busy weekend, I was only able to boot up my PS3 on Sunday morning. I actually felt like a kid, imagining waking up early, making coffee and breakfast and spending the entire day playing FFXIV. Yeah, that didn’t happen.

When I went to load up the game, it would give me an error message to say the version couldn’t be verified. Over and over and over again.  Eventually, I took to Google to determine what was going on. Apparently, I would need to download the game again – the new version has a new launcher. Perhaps if I had received the correct email in time, I could have done so. Instead, there simply weren’t enough hours in the day with my slow internet to re-download and get into the game.

Ever heard of an update/patch? Or how about at least informing your players?

Since then, I found out that my problem might have been because they were restricting logins to stem the tide. Perhaps Square Enix is a victim of their own success – people wanted to get into the game again! You obviously are doing something right if people are interested, so it might be a good idea to build some more capacity, especially with the game launching at the end of this month.

I hope I get to play in Eorzea again. It’s cool and I like my character. Unfortunately, it just isn’t worth the aggravation.

I had the same issue and pretty much the same feelings on the matter. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one in the “sucks-to-have shitty-internet” boat 🙂

Oh dear, Umar won’t be happy with this.. *hides behind curtain. Why do they lie then? Makes things very frustrating, not to mention it can make people look like right idiots. I mean right now I am in two minds about whether Zoe is a Hipster (has an Apple and spent BOTH Friday and Saturday being probably too cool somewhere) or whether this is all an elaborate ploy to make us thing she is cool and has a life. Shit, HIPSTER ;0 Jokes Zoe! 😉

😛 of course i’m just cool!
i’m sure plenty of other people managed to get on and have a good time, but there are really far too many issues with account management at this point. i’m not sure i believe they can fix them before launch, which is a shame, because the game itself is really cool

I think you were just too hungover from Friday and it took all of Sat to recover, and you are now covering your arse from Gavin! Hehehe! Hang on, that sounds totally not right 0-o It is a shame they don’t do these things better though. No one wants negative publicity before the game is even launched.

Start being more active and reading the beta forums if you want to participate in the BETA.. Tens of thousands new about the new client that was released on 8/15 that would be the new client for official release.

He probably mistook the full game size for the actual download size the game client takes up roughly around what you said but then the game takes up another 12GB once downloaded.

Lmao this article author is a moron. Perhaps if you payed ANY attention to the beta forums you would of known a MONTH before that you had to DL the new launcher. It’s true what they say, “You can’t fix stupid”.

I have to agree with Bryce on this. Even the first line gives you an idea already of someone who doesn’t understand beta’s. You stated “I enjoyed playing the BETA”, just so we all know it was still in BETA during the time you were trying to get on.

The whole point of this phase in the software development process is to figure out exactly the type of issues that occurred over the weekend and work on resolving them BEFORE launch. Unfortunately your article seems to miss that fact on several occasions and the only part I can agree with you on is the lousy proofreading done on that email that was sent out by SE.

      P. Magnum said it best “Start being more active and reading the beta forums if you want to participate in the BETA”

As fun has it is to be able to play early, it was still in a “development/test” phase in the software life-cycle. If you had mentioned this I might have had some understanding and possibly some sympathy for you for not being able to get in, but its clear you are just looking for anything relevant in the gaming world to write an article about.

Its unfortunate your article will be misinterpreted by people who think this was true retail launch issue, not a beta.

ROFL… everyone knew of the new launcher. Or at least everyone who has an IQ over 50. So many sources had the link to it. Why is this person writing articles when s/he cant even do simple detective work to get INTO the beta. FAIL

The beta invitation you originally received told you to check the beta forums.

The ‘READ THIS FIRST’ message tells you to check the Dev Tracker daily.

The notice regarding the client incompatibility was posted to the Dev Tracker.

You didn’t read it, as instructed. Instead you wrote an article complaining about how it’s Square-Enix’s fault you didn’t know about it.

They did screw up on the dates, but that’s not why you didn’t get to play last weekend.

“I hope I get to play in Eorzea again. It’s cool and I like my character. Unfortunately, it just isn’t worth the aggravation.”

Then buy the game on release when it isn’t in beta, and as everyone else said the reason you couldn’t get in is because you didn’t read that you needed a new client. That’s your own fault, not SE’s.

That really sucks =( The phase 3 Beta and Phase 4 beta had different clients because the Phase 4 beta was actually using the full game client so the good news is you won’t have to go through a big install if you buy the game just the basic patching and updating. Luckily I was trying out the PC version as well so saw the news on the official forums about downloading the new PS3 client. Game looks absolutely gorgeous on PC btw.

Also FFXIV ARR set the open beta record by having over 150k players logged in at once.

That record was for japan only. And it was not for a beta record it was a record in JAPAN only.

Either way, the author of this article is an idiot and has no what she is talking about half the time.

The fact that you couldn’t figure out to google the problem and solve it yourself, shows you shouldn’t be participating in beta. The question was asked on reddit many times and answered.

Heck why didn’t you just go to their site and re download it to troubleshoot yourself? Also, not worthe aggravation? It’s a beta test you fool, you should of known there was going to be problems.

So… since you didn’t read the beta forums before trying to access the beta on the PS3 you didn’t know the client had to be redownloaded for the PS3 and PC. Not their fault.

Lazy gamer indeed. While your piss ant slow connection was downloading the client you should’ve read the forums.
    It’s beta, it’s free, there’s issues.
