Why so many Ubisoft games are open world

openworld

These days, if a game isn’t a free-to-play shooter, an MMO or a MOBA, there’s a likelihood it’ll be a 3rd-person open world action game. That certainly seems to be the case with many of Ubisoft’s games this generation. following Watch Dogs, four of the company’s upcoming games are open world, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, The Crew, and The Division. Ubisoft Boss Yves Guillemot explains why.

“When we create games, it’s very important to recreate systems that we can interact with like it happens in our real life,” Guillemot said in an interview with Ubisoft’s own blog.

It’s this pen-world approach that they say allows them to make games that players can enjoy their way; alone, or together with friends without sacrificing the experience for anyone.

“When you want to play solo, you play solo. If you want to play with your friends, then you let them come join you,” Guillemot said. “The seamless solo/multiplayer is something that we’ve developed and that will continue to grow in the next few years.”

It’s also a great way to show off the power of the new generation consoles, with bigger crowds, better looking people and more realistic physics.

“In our industry, each time a new console arrives, it gives us a chance to actually create new brands, or to push forward some of our legacy brands,” Guillemot said. “That’s why at Ubisoft, we have always been there early with the arrival of new consoles. Because after that, you have five or ten years with those brands – even 15 years for some of them.”

And one day, Ubisoft might even use these open worlds and next generation power to make games with women in them, right?

Absolute twaddle!!! The only reason Ubisoft stick with this is that it’s a formula that they’ve actually had to do very little to since it was first introduced by them in the original Far Cry…

Think about it, all the Far Cry versions, Assasins Creed, Watch Dogs etc. are basically the same game… Open world, go to some area, kill some bad guys, defeat some fort / radio tower / cell tower etc. to open the next bit of the map up… Rinse and repeat. the only difference is the skin they slap on top of it… Don’t get me wrong, I am actually a fan of what Ubisoft has done here, but realistically they’ve basically had the same game at basic game mechanics level developed for years with just a few tweaks / new skin thrown on every year or so… great business model, develop something once just change the look and feel a bit each year and re-release…

And now I’ll sit back and relish in the hate from the Ubi fanboys as it washes over me…!!! 😉

So it is like buying a Toyota Hilux bakkie???? 10 years ago the Hilux was given an upgrade to the D4D model, ever since the same bakkie has been sold with the name “Legend” or “Dakar” or “Special edition” added at the back…. They only change the grill and add a new background colour to the dials on the dash!! Viola, millions in the bank without changing anything…. If it works for them then Ubi might as well follow the model!!

Except, Ubisoft had nothing to Do with FarCry 1, Crytek (then not linked to a publisher) Went to Ubisoft to get their game published… and because they were poor, the let Ubi buy the franchise soon after… This is why Farcry 2 was Developed by no-one from the original team, and was built using a Different Engine Entirely… And Farcry wasn’t even that successful, it was a PC exclusive in 2004, competing against the near perfect half-life 2 and The Bad Boy Orginators latest incarnation in Doom 3…. okay that meandered a bit… but Ubisoft On Really Started going “open world” in 2007… Games before that time were pretty linear in their camp…

Point accepted re Far Cry 1, however the gist is that the basic game mechanics of their open world games haven’t changed much (if at all) since then, they’re the same thing with a different skin. Technically it may be a different engine, but if still goes vroom, vroom and delivers the same output it’s pretty much the same thing… they’re just regurgitating prettier versions of the same basic thing…

        But point made and acknowledged…

So what? the point is it’s the same basic game, just in different pretty skins… the game play is at basic level the same thing.

I love open world games so I’m cool with this.

However I am sure I’d like FPS games too if their level designs were more complex. Like they were back in the old days

Like Wolfenstein: The New Order, or more Shadow Warrior (the new one)? both have modern takes on older level design mantra’s…
