Why the 360 will always have the best games

Our local 360 fanboy leader (Doobiwan) has written another post on is personal site detailing why he thinks the 360 is the better machine, this time in relation to the games.

While Doobiwan has never hid the fact that he is a 360 fanboy I do think he makes some very valid points in his article.

Diving right in, the often quoted console install base is only half the story, attach rate (games sold per console) play as significant a role in putting things in context. The Wii has an install base of around 12.5 million units, but the attach rate is around 2, the PS3 has an install base of around 5.5 million , and an attach rate of about 3. The xbox360 sits at over 12 million sold, but the attach rate sits at 6. The 360 has one of, if not the highest attach rate of a console in history.

He starts off with some possible dubious maths about the attachment rates of all three machines, while I agree the 360 easily has the best attachment rate I am not sure we can bundle 2 PS3 games with the majority of PS3 hardware sales. The starter pack is quite a new addition to the family.

Anyway the part I really agree with is where he goes on to compare the unified platforms of the 360 and PC compared to the different and difficult to develop for PS3. If you were a new independent developer with an idea for a game. Which would you prefer to do?

Develop a prototype for the PC and 360 using the tools you always have, and which are available for free, or develop a prototype for the PS3 using tools that you had to pay huge amounts of money for and get permission to use first?

By simple arithmetic the PS3 would attach 11 million game sales, compared to 60 million units on the 360. While not an exact measurement that basically says the average 3rd party game would potentially do 6 times as well on the 360 platform as it would on the PS3. But it doesn’t end there.

Now taking into consideration that Sony won’t pay for exclusives and has the smallest installation base, and Microsoft will pay and has the best installation rate and you can see why the Xbox 360 is always going to have the best games in this generation and until Sony start paying for exclusives and giving away development kits that is not going to change.

So who can find a fault in this logic?

Sigh what an intelligent and witty comeback… Thanks Zeek.

I don’t know if Doobiwan is comfortable with anyone knowing anything about him but I can say that he is highly educated and has absolutely no links to Xbox or Microsoft or the SA gaming industry… Self confessed Xbox 360 fanboy is all.

And what no comments on the picture I found?

rofl Lazy, I may just steal that image for my blog 😉

    @Zeek, 360’s are all still under warranty so there’s no money in it . . . :p

If you must know I’m in software development. My company has been evaluating getting into game development for a few years, so this stuff isn’t just thumb suck. What I can tell you is that Microsoft (and Nintendo) did their homework and it shows.

There’s no arguing that the attach rate is phenomenal on the xbox. Remember, MS and Sony make a huge loss on the console sales and get back the cash on software and accessory sales. So if Sony’s attach rate is low, they don’t make money.

I agree with doobiwan to an extent. At present, if you make a game for the 360 and the PS3, you are going to sell more copies of the xbox version. DESPITE the hardware failures, people are buying games.

My sentiments exactly Zeek, that last post sums it up.

All I have to say, is that I maintain, that the ps3 will win this war, in both hardware and software sales!

Favouritism? Lol… its the PS3 fanboys who are just not willing to admit their expensive console is not up to scratch Zeek. I own one too and to be honest I am still waiting for the games to be available as Sony had promised.

If you dont care much about console wars its funny how you diss somebody’s opinion so easily while you dont have anything valid on the table.

I’m sorry, but I have an increasingly difficult time analysing and arguing against doobiwan’s beliefs. Seriously. The mere fact that a massive chunk of the article is an “in my opinion” negates it even being an argument. Argumentation is reasoned judgement and when flashes of reasoned judgement appear – which they ocassionally do – they are marred by his very opinionatedness.

    Try this:
    A) In my opinion, the Wii will win because it’s more attractive to soccer moms.
    or
    B) Seemingly, the Wii is in a position where victory is very possible simply because it has infiltrated a space in the casual market many feel hasn’t been infilitrated before. Like the DS vs. PSP battle – where the PSP is not struggling but is still losing by 2-1 – it seems that hardware specs and raw power aren’t actually all that matter and raw fun, which the DS and Wii seem to offer, may count for more than pixel pushing.

See my point? I’ve expressed what I believe WITHOUT including my personal preference. But I understand, it is his blog. I just think the opinionated nature of it negates the need to even attempt a response.

Thats all good Zeek but it’s hard to not take it as an insult when you say the Xbox is a sh*t console. I’m all for thoughtfull debates but your comment sunk lower than fanboyism or favoritism, it’s on a troll level. Maybe if you gave valid reasons why you think it is a sh*t console…

@Zeek, There is no favouritism here. The first reader article that I ever posted was a PS3 review. I then posted Andre’s one yesterday.

I have rarely not posted a tip that has been sent my way and I am sure Abev and others can back that up.

South African articles get a huge preference over international ones as well.

I did specify that this was written by a 360 fanboy and that it was posted on his ‘personal’ site. I would love to post a response article if anyone has one 😉

    @SlippyMadFrog

Would you buy a car if you heard the engine keeps on blowing.
Have to take it away for repairs an wait couple of weeks for it to be returned????

Clearly someone who is sane would not.
My point is clearly that the main reason the PS3 is doing bad is cause of all the negative PR on it.
I mean every PS3 article that is negative states the high price of this console yet XBOX clearly tries to hide the faults an defects of their console.
Seems more a war on media against the PS3 than console wars.

Pillsbury I value constructive criticisms, and would appreciate it if you would point out where in the article my opinionatedness outweighs reasonable judgement?

In regards to the Wii – it’s already won, for Nintendo at least. I give it its full due, I’ve always been a fan. (The blog used to be WiiZA 😉 ) The Wii has defined its own long term stable ecosystem, the same cannot be said of the 360 and PS3. Similarly for the PC, it’s long term future is not in question.

@Zeek, if you think PR is the only reason people don’t by PS3’s then I’m afraid you need a head check. PS3’s are not selling because the price is too high, and the competition (both 360 and Wii) have more games people want to play. It’s as simple as that. The PS2’s early reliability track record was also abysmal, but it had the games. Games. Games. Games.

@Zeek – MS tries to hide the faults? They OPENLY admitted to the hardware issues. What more do you want?

In regards to Sony’s negative PR, its their own idiotic people who keep distorting their own truths or lies. I mean first they state BC as a feature of the PS3, now they say its useless. How daft is that?

    @ Zeek

    Thanks for the reply.

The Xbox360 has a reliability problem, I can’t deny it and MS certainly can’t. The question is if it is as bad as everyone say it is? I personaly don’t thinks so. Maybe it’s because I never had the RROD but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.
Dealing with a RROD is a minor irretation when it comes to the great times had with the Xbox360. It’s games linup is second to none at the moment. According to http://www.gamerankings.com, there are 63 games ranked over 80% while there are only 19 games for the PS3 that ranks over 80%. The PS3 have a couple of big hitters that is coming but having an Xbox360 is essential for any person that considers himself a serious gamer because of the un-missable titles on it at the moment.

Please know your facts before jumping to conclusions.

rofl @ Zeek. You’re doing the “playstation thing” again – Mud slinging sans mud.

I’ll happily admit and acknowledge problems with the 360. I openly criticize it, unlike the uh, “Sony Defense Force”, such as yourself. If Microsoft hadn’t done anything to address the hardware issues then, sure it’s something to gripe about. fact is they fixed the problem and made amends, and I can get a new one in less than an hour should I have an issue.

The truth is the 360 is the best platform on which to play games. End of story. Cost, quantity, quality, diversity, existing, forthcoming, online, offline It’s got all the bases covered. Sure it’s got issues, and sure the PS3 has more features, but I (and 12.1+ Million others) don’t care. A games console is for games.

If someone wants a Blu-ray player it’s a different story, I’ve even gone so far as to openly suggest PS3’s to some. Although I won’t again since Toshiba have released the $200 A2 HD-DVD player.
