Wii Sports, the best-selling game of all time.

The biggest and most jaw-dropping gaming milestone has just been smashed in the most arbitrary fashion. Wii Sports, the game bundled with the Wii, has beaten the long-standing record held by Super Mario Bros on the NES.

Super Mario Bros, also a bundled game, sold a staggering 40.24 million units. Wii Sports has sold, as of the 27th of December, 40.52 million units.

The astonishing thing is that number will grow as the gaming public still appears to have an insatiable appetite for Nintendo’s little white console with the peculiar control.

So sad, now some people will actually think that Wii Sports is a better game than Super Mario Bros.

    lol
But imo a bundled game shouldn’t be counted as a sale
    in instances like this.

I totally agree. It would be interesting if we knew what it’s ‘stand alone’ sales figures are.

well on wii sport all sales in europe and america are bundled.

Only Japan sell it as stand alone.

so only about 1 – 2 million was sold as a game.

If thats the case then should not Snake be one of the most bought games of all time? Almost every Nokia came with a version.

I was right. Almost 440mil mobile phone sold. So take into account 40mil were to primative to play snake we are looking at 400mil copies of Snake. 10x the amount of Wii sports sold.

That nokia range were not gaming platforms or consoles in any way shape or form, gaming was not in its top 5 purposes, they were rather there for wasting 10 mins or doing something during class.

The Wii (and NES) is a gaming PLATFORM. That is its primary function. Wii Sports was bundled in the West to show-off the wiimote’s technology and be an added incentive to buy the console.

Can you buy Snake? No. Can you buy Wii Sports? Yes. Ergo, Wii Sports has sales attached to it.

I find it amusing how for 20 odd years no one complained that the best selling game of all time was also a bundled game, and now its suddenly a problem.
