The Witcher has sold over 20 million copies

Witcher3

[Update] This article incorrectly stated that the Witcher 3 has sold 20 million copies. The total is for the franchise as a whole.

How many copies of a game does a AAA studio need to sell for aid game to be considered a success? In previous generations, 1 million copies was a good measure – but in recent generations we’ve come to understand that it takes about 5 million copies sold for a great big, blockbuster game to break even.

Rising costs mean games have greater budgets – but are still being sold at the $60 mark as they have been for years. By that measure though, the Witcher 3 is more than just a success; it’s become a juggernaut.

In its financial year end report (via neoGAF), CD Projekt RED has said that The Witcher franchise has sold over 20 million copies.

With regards to The Witcher 3, because developers get a bigger slice of the pie when the retailer isn’t the middleman, as much as 50.2% of the game’s revenue is through digital distribution, even though that channel accounts for just 31,6% of its sales.

w3revenue

In the same call, CDPR has said that this year, it’ll be working on “A new type of video game format previously unexplored by the Studio.”

They’ve done sprawling RPGS, and mobile mobas – so what’s next for CDPR? A standalone Gwent game? Either way, the studio is looking to grow in the coming year, expanding outside of its current base of operations in Poland – which I hope won’t lead to the studio losing its soul.

That aside, CD Projekt RED’s successes are well deserved; The Witcher 3 has, in many ways, ruined some other games for me.

    Cyberpunk is next

Cyberpunk 2077 is next for CDPR

    Cyberpunk 2077 is coming.

I always laugh when I see you love on CDPR but spout “Don’t support DRM” in the same sentence. Probably more than 85% of their income comes from DRM platforms and/or channels. If we listened to what you spout, CDPR would be out of business. That sounds awesome, let’s do that. Let’s bankrupt the gaming industry and go back to Monopoly.

68% picked up a retail copy meaning no fucking drm. If there were no digital options do you really think 31% will not pick up a retail copy.

but if you look at it the other way then it’s not that simple.

Physical is console too. LOL. And those are all 100% DRM. You’ll find more people bought digital, on Steam for PC. PC physical isn’t very popular any more.

            March 10, 2016 at 12:29

Ok, so physical is both pc and console. Let’s be conservative. 33% is pc, 33% Xbox, 33% PS4. That makes 45% of total sales just on console. Guaranteed DRM.

Let’s assume the same for digital. 66% console. But, ALL of these are DRM. That adds another 20% total sales, guaranteed DRM.

So right off the bat, 65% of total sales are DRM.

Now, on PC digital, only the copies bought through GoG are non-DRM. So let’s assume (again, generously) that 50% of those sales were on GoG. That leaves another 5% guaranteed DRM.

70% of sales, according to these very conservative estimates, guaranteed DRM.

Remebering one thing – PC gamers in general, have swayed almost to a 65% digital bias when buying games, as of last year. That number is rising. Add to that fact that Steam has a vast majority of the digital sales market on PC, and you’ll start to get a better idea.

Although as I finish this, I know you won’t understand this, and will revert to your usual drivel. So this is for everyone else. Enjoy.

is this a very long, roundish bread? Sort of French?

EVEN the bread you want to make is narrow.

And my wife’s bakes our bread, so I have no idea. For all I know that is what she does.

            March 10, 2016 at 12:52

Buns are a bit more work to make, so my wife sticks to small loafs, but they ARE NOT narrow. Small, but in proportion, width versus length.

I am eating, more or less right now, home made bread with sauce and ham and on or two other awesome little fillings. And it is not narrow, either.

Basically, nothing is narrow minded where I can see. Nothing. So there.

Put that in your narrow pipe and smoke that with your narrow whiskey tumbler. Which is a crime. Whiskey is not drunk out of narrow, high ball tumblers. Ok? Sheesh, man. The smoking is bad enough, but now the whiskey in in the wrong glass? Man. I hope, at least, the scotch is on the rocks and at least ten years old. At least.

And yes. I always have my whisky and whiskey on the rocks 🙂 Short glass. I don’t care about single malt, blend or pure malt – a good whiskey is a good whiskey. Also…I prefer Irish 😀

because people like you want to be right and to make fun of others.

Let’s look at GMO Monsanto Corn. When ever i mention GMO corn there will be a big response to say how fucking stupid i am. Monsanto GMO causes cancer in lab rats. The scientific went to court and won against Monsanto (or whoever) meaning that Monsanto GMO corn and others are causing fucking cancer in lab rats.

I’ve been saying this for a long time and for a long time i’ve been told how wrong i am and how safe gmo monsanto is. but it’s not safe. it’s cancer causing.

but still just because i say it. ….

“because people like you want to be right and to make fun of others.”, I think if you look at most of Rince’s posts, this does not seems to be case.

A healthy debate is good, though.

Also, I have read a lot on Monsanto and am shocked at how much they get away with. US FDA says it is ok, no need to test the GMO grain for humans, as Monsanto designed it kill bugs, not humans. So by design not for humans, therefore they did no tests and passed it. YET all other food stuffs and the like are stringently tested.

i don’t look at most of these people’s other comments. I look at what happens under my comments.

hell no, my wife’s family of nature lovers and outdoors-man think there is nothing wrong with GMO products. Ok, I think that too. I just think you need to be very responsible with checks and balances AND that is not in place, anywhere in the world, that I can see.

Your anti-ryanza message is pretty clear. Guaranteed lol.

33% is digital sales means gog, steam, origin, xbox live, psn sales. This is the DRM you looking for.

retail sales makes up 68%. the pc version here is not steam nor gog.

the interesting thing about this news is that 33% of digital sales is more than 68% retail sales. Sell less and make more money – DRM utopia.

Fair enough. Of all the other PC platforms, Origin is by far the best. It’s super stable and very user friendly. In my experience at least. I tend to spend a lot of time on it due to BF4. But Steam is still my go to platform.

          • Captain JJ the Isolated

            March 10, 2016 at 12:43

I can’t stand Origin, it looks too kiddy and it has no value to me as a customer. All it can do is run my games.
It is super stable (aside from needing an update every week) and it’s solid for sure. That I cannot argue with at all. I’ve never had an issue on it.

    March 10, 2016 at 14:38

I think I need to stop Ryanza here. From anti-drm comments to highlighting a game that was released at retail for pc with no drm. Witcher 3 with no drm at retail for pc showed that you don’t need drm to sell well on pc.

The anti-Ryanza campaign that started and grew is now comes at the detriment to those who have real concerns over drm. I noticed it in some of the drm related articles.

Too much of anything is bad. hence the anti-Ryanza campaign. And looking at all the people who promote DRM concerns on here, Ryanza’s anti-drm voice is not needed on here.

I ask that when people have concerns about drm and takes the time to express their view, don’t drown out that persons view with bullshit like you assholes do with my comments. Just let the people’s comments and views stand without tainting it with your anti-ryanza bullshit.

you don’t have to agree or disagree with every view point. It’s just important to have view points represented.

So yes, shut up, let the view points stand and then add your own view points to stand. People’s view points don’t need to be turned to shit.

Me representing a view point not necessarily my own views, and you representing a different point of view, is better than you coming under my comments to say, fuck you stupid. Just an example.

It’s too much to get into and I don’t like these long ass comments. I’m not talking just about myself. Get comfortable with just letting people’s points of view stand without the need to turn it to shit.
Turning points of views to shit leads to those points of views not being represented.
