Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of my more anticipated games of the year. Old school, gory and unapologetically beautiful in the Nazi-maiming department. It’ll ship in various versions, vanilla retail and collector’s edition when it releases in the next couple of days. But don’t expect any of those editions to have a bottle of vaseline with them when you get hit with the day one patch.
Gaming blogger Mark DeSanto gave the following tweet a couple of hours ago, revealing that the PlayStation 4 version of the game would have a hefty 5GB day one patch:
Wolfenstein has a day-one 5GB patch. #WolfensteinTheNewOrder #bethesda
— Mark DeSanto (@heymarkd) May 14, 2014
And below that, CraveOnline gaming editor Jonathan Leack mentioned that the Xbox One version had a 7.3GB patch waiting awaiting gamers on launch day:
@heymarkd The Xbox One version is 7.3GB. I have a feeling this game has great audio and graphics.
— Jonathan Leack (@JLeack) May 14, 2014
What’s strange however, is that the CraveOnline article about these patches has been taken down, making this sound like a case of someone breaking the rules of a review embargo. Technically, we’re not allowed to talk about any of those issues until D-day, when we get early copies of a game.
And in case you’re planning to download it, Wolfenstein: The New Order will also be a rather large download. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will consume 47GB of your bandwidth, while PC gamers will need to ready themselves for a 50GB download. Sounds like a Nazi piece of work, this patch.
PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers get off easy, with their less pretty versions of the game clocking in at 17GB. The game is out on May 20.

As long as you can own a torch made after 2000 with a longer than 10 min battery life and carry it with you. Better yet not forget your tactical light attachment at home before being deployed on a mission and entering the gates of hell.

If you pre order they let you start downloading a couple of days before the release. Also, if you buy a disc you get slapped with a 5gb patch. But I agree, it would suck to wait 3 days to play! Luckily I have a shitload of games in my steam backlog.

The really freaky thing is that the ‘patch’ to this game requires about 2.5 times the capacity of my first PC’s hard drive! I know technology expands about as fast as my waistline, but wow. I just hope that somewhere some guy in the right place at the right times stands up and ask the question: “Hang on guys! Are we not slowly killing gaming by doing this shit?”
Hammersteyn
May 15, 2014 at 09:27
Depends on the game, if it’s really really good then I don’t mind the size. Wait and see how big TLOU is going to be. I bet it will be even bigger than Wolfenstein.
pino
May 20, 2014 at 17:28
Haha young one… my first hard drive was 200 mb and could barely hold dos or windows 3.1… it was a 5,25 inch hard drive even.
I do wonder why this game is this big tho as its a pure single player and graphics arent that good even. id say they got lazy and just used uncompressed audio video and textures so in reality this game is barely 20 gb.
