WolfPirate

Bethesda and Machine Games’ Wolfenstein: the New Order is pretty excellent stuff, meshing old-school ideas with modern ones in a way that actually works. It’s jumped to the top of sales lists the world over, which is great for a shooter that took the brave decision to excise multiplayer. It’s also being pirated like madness, despite weighing in at nearly 50gb.

According to tracking site TorrentFreak (via VG247), the game has been downloaded over 100 000 times on torrents alone. Who knows how many have been illicitly acquired through those other underbelly file sharing and download services.

And those people who’ve been downloading the game without paying for it have been complaining about its size. It’s especially important for people who use torrents, because they’re busy uploading while they steal games.

“38 hours later I finally finish my download and have uploaded 122.15 GB,” said one pirate.

“43GB? holy fuck,” exclaimed  another.

“I have to uninstall like 10 games to play this shit!!” added one last software-stealing miscreant.

Funnily enough, the game’s gargantuan size has actually deterred a fair number of would-be pirates.

“I was gonna get this torrent but I saw the size and how long it would take me to download it, I said fuck it I’m getting it from Steam,” said one user. “Took me 2 hours to download 40GB including the day one update.”

“43GB, the hell? No thanks, guess I will buy this when the price drops to £29.99,” said another dodgy file-sharer.

The game is good, and it’s worth buying. It might have been even better if it was a 2nd person shooter.

Guilty, first game I have pirated this year. Torrent is running for a week now, almost done, 20gb uploaded 😛 IMO it’s just too expensive at $60 without knowing how good it is. Replaying RTCW while it downloads. If its decent, I will buy it. But for now first few levels will be treated as a demo :>

Oh it takes a lot more to make me cry. Please link me to a demo. Show me how not pirating it hurts them more than not buying it. In fact many would agree games that they would otherwise have no interest in they ended up buying because they pirated it first.

Learn to discriminate between opportunists from those who care about a good game.

Diablo 3 was the last $60 garbage I will ever buy before I give it a proper playtest.

Many “say” they only pirate it to “test” the game to see if it’s good enough. When you go to the movies do you also ask for a refund if a movie is bad? The whole “pirate to test” nonsense is a bit too convenient. Read reviews. Watch some Youtube clips of it being played. READ comments on the game. It should inform you more than enough before making a decision on whether to get the game or not.

He didn’t call you a douche to try and make you cry. He called you a douche, because being a pirate, that’s pretty much what it comes down to. If you’re torrenting and seeding it just makes it that much worse.

Haha, yeah reviews like those who gave Diablo 3 95% score. Would’ve sworn it was the best game ever and noobs saying how they love it. Haha!

Sorry. Back in the day we had shareware and demos. Now they just lure you in with cheap marketing and bought reviewers in print and on youtube.

No demos, no way to test it. If publishers had any confidence in their product they would release a demo.

No thanks. I test drive a car before I buy, if I am not happy with a service I ask a refund. When I buy a book I read the first few pages on Amazon or in the store. When watching a movie I watch a preview first, when buying a game a play a demo first.

Diablo’s major issues was the always online, online AH and the servers crashing at launch. The Diablo from now compared to Diablo when it launched are completely different games. Using one bad experience to try and justify pirating still stays a bit too convenient.

You can’t compare buying a game to buying a car. A game doesn’t take you to work. And if someone doesn’t allow you to test drive a car you’re not going to steal a car. You don’t download an entire movie to watch the previews either. And shareware isn’t completely free. LIke the utility version of F2P.

I have nothing against games with demos. But lacking a demo is hardly an excuse to pirate.

            May 28, 2014 at 15:09

            Not sure I follow.

You watch the previews to preview a movie.

You play a demo to demo a game.

What is so hard to understand?

          • Eric

            May 28, 2014 at 15:31

It’s not hard to understand that you’re using the inability to wait for a game’s price to come down as an excuse to pirate and “test drive” it. And there aren’t a lot of people who will buy a car without test driving it, but there sure as hell are a lot of people who buy games without having a demo. How many PS4 pre-orders in SA were made by people who got hands on experience with the console before ordering in comparison to those who didn’t?

You can watch a demo too instead of just playing it. There are tons of ways available to make an informed decision and you’re using the lack of just that one as an excuse. The high pirate numbers are the software houses’ main excuse for implementing DRM and huge ass day one patches. There’s no way to argue around that. It doesn’t just hurt the industry on their side, but also for the consumers who actually do get the games on day one.

You might think that intending to buy the game after a couple of levels(and 99% of pirates probably wont) doesn’t contribute in some major way to the issues with piracy, but it still contributes more than it’s fair share.

I guess we can go on and on, but had I not pre ordered Diablo 3, I would’ve got it anyway based on the reviews. I’ve learned now. Had I been more patient I would’ve tried the demo, and Blizzard would not have received a single cent.
Which in my mind is fair.

No demo for Wolfenstein, I will ‘demo’ it first. If its good, $60 to the coffers of Zenimax for a well deserved product. Should I wait for a steam special, I probably won’t buy it unless its extremely cheap like the Tomb Raider special for $8.99, or $12.99 can’t remember, and that’s a massive loss.

In the end I will feel more like a cheap bastard waiting for the special than buying it at full price if it turns out a good game.

And that is ultimately the reason why I won’t budge on this point.

Give us demos again, and I don’t need to do this.

My introduction into gaming came from arcades and Golden China(oh the irony). I didn’t pirate to get into gaming. I pirated because I was already into it and was too naive too understand why it was wrong. The whole “copying isn’t stealing”. But being a developer I’d sure be pissed off if someone just copied something I spent so much hard work and time on.

But then again: The other side of the coin: Developers are first to cry their eyes out when piracy strikes. (Not aiming this at you, please understand.)
But if we get robbed of R700.00 because we bought a dud of a game… And let’s face it, if I bought a stinker, what are the odds of me getting a refund for my purchase from the lovely lady behind the CNA counter?

          • Eric

            May 28, 2014 at 15:43

The fact that you can’t get refunded for anything that can be counterfeited while in your possession is a direct result of piracy though. It would be pretty utopian though. And the R700 price tag isn’t just because devs and publishers are greedy. We also have our pretty economy and rand value to blame for that.

          • Dutch Matrix

            May 28, 2014 at 15:57

Look, at the end of the day we can blame whoever/whatever we want for the prices of games. R700.00 is still R700.00 I lost. My hard earned cash going down the crapper.
So… whilst it may be true that piracy is to blame for the stores reluctance to refund me, it is also a contributing factor to Piracy. I cannot afford to blow R700.00 (Or even R99.00) on inferior product.
Give me a demo, or a console setup in a store for me to playtest a game, and we can have this conversation again. Until then, torrentz will be my first port of call…

Dude, You can insult me from any perspective you see fit. The argument is redundant because even pirating for so-called demo purposes is Illegal. You are committing a crime which has cost me and many other legal game enthusiasts Money. The fact is, I choose to live a honest life. I don’t steal pretending that it is for demo purposes. I read trusted sources for reviews and opinions and I take a risk on some games. I just don’t see the point of taking a perfectly good console and destroying it for the right to play games illegally. And I resorted to the tone that I did because even though you think you can justify your behavior by trying to shift focus on to my lack of arithmetic or perception thereof, You are fundamentally wrong on every level. And maybe if I took the time to find out who you really are, I would call the police or relevant parties and tell them about your habit of breaking justified laws protecting Intellectual Property.

I don’t pretend that it is for demoing. I use it for demoing. I don’t break anything, or take anything away from anyone. I am minimising my risk as a consumer. And as I explained in other replies I do this in an ethical way. If I dislike the game I delete it. I don’t finish it. If I like it I buy it. This is not unlike any experience that someone would have through a demo of steam sharing(which I only learned about now). I give EA some credit here for their 24 hours return policy, and steam for their family sharing, that basically allows you to do what I do.

And you yourself admitted to pirating, and I highly doubt anyone who disagreed with me does not have some of the latest series and music pirated.

I’d rather give $60 to a good game, than wait 12 months for a $8 steam special for them to lose $52 on revenue.

If that is true then good for you. I am damn sure that many who use that as an excuse do not mean it. That being said though, we don’t get the chance to demo many many things in the world and to me just because it’s digital content doesn’t give me the right to illegally acquire it to test whether I like it. I can’t test a movie out (trailers are both for games, movies and series), books, music etc.

And places like Steam has user reviews. A whole boatload of them. Since I don’t usually trust what the big reviewers say (seeing as how they’ve hyped up many games that turned out to be total crap), that’s my go to. Users are honest and they spent their own money buying it. So it’s a pretty safe bet.

            May 28, 2014 at 15:53

Just to add. Also, whether a game is good or not is also very subjective. If someone else enjoys something more than you do, does it mean you get to pay less for the same product? Sure, you really do get the 1% of people who will buy the game after pirating it. But you’ll also get those people who say they will, go and pirate all 3 Mass Effect games and not buy it because they didn’t like the ending.

          • Jedi JJ

            May 28, 2014 at 15:58

            That’s absolutely true.
I read a lot of user reviews on Steam so I can get a good idea of what to expect. That way I can pick up things that I would also dislike or enjoy and make a little more educated decision at least.
But it’s like you say, a small thing like a bad ending will make some people not buy the game, and that’s not entirely fair. Everyone has had some buyer’s regret, that’s life.

            May 28, 2014 at 15:16

That’s why I said, people need to discriminate. Not all pirates are the same. I do it in my mind ethically. If I don’t like it I stop playing it, if I like it I buy it. I only need 15-30 minutes to make this choice.

It’s my 2 minute movie preview, my 6 pages on Amazon, my pen scribble, my test drive. And this has always available with demos.

The ‘playtest’ excuse only exist because publishers no longer have the confidence to release demos.

I downloaded Spec Ops: The Line for PC round about release day. I played a few levels, decided it was good and when I went to the store, I saw it was selling at R600.00 for Xbox. (My PC struggled a bit with the game, so I decided to go for the Console version)
It was good, but not R600.00 good.
About 6 or so months ago, I saw it on sale for R150.00 on Xbox. Bought the game then and all is well in the world.

Actually, in most restaurants, you can complain about the food and get refunds. I’ve seen it more times than I’m willing to count. In most restaurants, the cost of negative publicity is far far higher than the cost of refunding an unsatisfied customer.

The problem with that is there’s always someone smarter than you, trying to break it. And they’re very, very good at it.

Unless you really need the visual basic to work Libre office works as good as. I hear the new open office isn’t to bad either. Note that you can also script on LO only it doesn’t always work on MS excel when you do so.

If they wanted me to buy this game to test it out then they would have released a non DRM version.
So many people pirating the game means that there is a need for a non DRM version.
High piracy numbers means, A – the game is good or B – people trying to fing out if the game is good.
Non DRM would have had more of those pirates buying the game to find out if it’s good.
Why is the non DRM version free. and why are paying customers treated as pirates.

    Don’t support DRM.

1st off the DRM for The Witcher 2 showed that DRM = a big knock to game performance.

2nd CD Project RED found out that the people who crack the games are more into the challenge of cracking games, so they never bothered with the non DRM version of The Witcher 2, it was all about cracking the DRM version and making that version available to the pirates as quick as possible.

If you have Steam and you have a few friends on it then this: “I pirate to try it” is also bull.
    Family sharing.
Try a game from your friend’s library. If you like it, you buy it and all your saves are transferred. If you don’t, then luckily you didn’t buy it.

That’s not the point of family sharing. The point is that you get to try it out. You can’t access your own library when someone else is using it and vise verse. Believe me, it gets frustrating pretty damn quick, but you can demo the game and then buy it yourself. Which has really worked well in my case.

Steam wouldn’t have implemented it if they didn’t think it would be worth it.
