In an age of persistently online games and social-gloating, Wolfenstein: The New Order is tossing all that aside to focus on being just a core single-player experience. No multiplayer, just pure Reich Said Fred action with a story to tell. And it’ll be worth replaying according to its developers.
Over on a Reddit Ask Me Anything, creative director Jens Matthies explained that the latest Wolfenstein das reboot would offer players an alternate timeline to explore once the shooter was clocked. “This game is exclusive single-player, but we’ve built in lots of replay value,” Matthies explained.
Most notably is that the player makes a choice early on the outcome of which opens up an alternate time line which changes the vibe of the story. It’s recommended to do a second play through and see what would have happened if you chose differently.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it changes the vibe of the story to a degree and alters the gameplay somewhat. We think of it as an alternate ending, but instead of it just affecting the final cinematic, it affects the tone of the whole game a little bit.
As for how long that first playthrough would last, Matthies explained that it could take up to 20 hours for determined treasure seeker players:
I think a single playthrough could end up close to 20 hours. But there’s also lots of incentive to make a second play through, especially to explore the alternate time line.
A modern day shooter with no multiplayer asking players to get invested in the story? Why that’s just…exactly what I want actually. Wolfenstein: The New Order looks like a great throwback to the past so far. All guns and even more glory with some new-gen shine.
It’s out on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One locally on May 23. Meine Damen und Herren.

Also Doom Beta for all that’s worth.

Anyone play Nier? Play that game four times then talk to me about multiple playthroughs, no game has yet to implement multiple playthroughs as well as this game. The second time I played it my mind was blown and it literally changed the way I felt about the game playing it for a second time. Playing a game a second time just to do a choice differently is pretty common

Sure, you can choose different story paths, and fair enough it is different. But like I mentioned choosing different choices to affect the story is pretty common now a days and ME is one of those games that implemented it great. But Nier does something different all together and that’s why I said what I said, it’s uncommon and brilliantly executed. On the fourth playthrough it even does something to your save game which just further impact’s the emotional story connection

In that case, I’m uncommon – if I replay a game I tend to make the same choices. I normally don’t replay games anymore because while a choice or two might be different, the overall story doesn’t change much & I don’t see the point of slogging through the whole game again with the same story for only a couple of minor differences. That, and I have a lot of unplayed games heh.

I finally finished FA:NV last week, then reloaded a prior save to change the ending, and might try one more again, since the end-game quests all differ!
Alien Emperor Trevor
May 12, 2014 at 08:09
Reloading a save to get a different ending is okay, but imagine having to replay the whole game to get that different ending. Not for me.
Admiral Chief in Space
May 12, 2014 at 08:11
I’m tempted to do that, but 115 hours of gameplay in a single playthrough just to see some differences (some allegiances and enemies made with factions for example) is a bit much to ask considering all the other games that require my attention
Alien Emperor Trevor
May 12, 2014 at 08:13

Like everyone else, I also hope this will be a decent game at the least. Wolfenstein is the granddaddy of FPSes, so I hope it holds that torch high! Its focus on gore though as can be seen from some gameplay videos is pretty worrying. Many developers make up for a lack of gameplay or story with gore or sex!
