Skyrim Remaster

Skyrim is coming soon as a remastered version, bringing a wealth of engine improvements to a game that modders have been improving for years already. While it will bring those engine changes and overhauls to the PC version of the game, it’s mostly meant for console gamers who’ve moved on to the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 – or those who’ve not played the game yet.

While it was expected, it seems that unfortunately those who’ve already played the game on the last generations of consoles won’t be able to transfer their saves across to the new consoles.

Responding to a consumer on Twitter, Bethesda’s Pete Hines confirmed that cross generation or platform save game transfers will not be happening. It’s hardly surprising really, given the differences in how the new consoles and the old consoles handle data. Of course, that sort of thing is possible. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection allowed people to import their old saves provided it was to the same family of consoles.

Still, if you’re paying full price for a game, you may as well start at the beginning, right?

And for those of you on PC wondering if the upgrade will be worth it, it’s worth noting that the remaster will have a 64 bit executable. That opens up the amount of memory available to the game quite considerably. What that means is that industrious modders will be able to do even more with the game.

For interest’s sake, here’s a video by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry showing footage of the remaster juxtaposed with the best visual upgrades offered by modders.

The remaster looks better than the mods tbh. Foliage and details are better, lighting is better – and I always hated textures that were too sharp. You want some softness in there, so even that isn’t a minus for me.

I’d still prefer a new game, but it’s not gonna happen till people tire of TESO

never played it, watched some game-play. Tired of it.

May well get Skyrim and ALL expansions on Xbox One, at the right (not full) price.

If you’ve never played it, then do get it. It’s a lot like smoking cigarettes – you know it’s bad for you and completely unnecessary, but you can’t help yourself because it’s so damn good.

The thing is that TESO doesn’t cater for the true Elder Scrolls fans, it caters for the MMO crowd.
As an Elder Scrolls fan, TESO isn’t a real Elder Scrolls game to me.

You know…I have a friend and colleague who loves Skyrim, has been modding the thing and going crazy on it, when this was announced, he turned to me and asked “Why do they keep dragging the dead dog out of the closet?” So yeah, rather give us a new game, this cash in mentality grinds my gears…

It does look nice, but it still doesn’t hide the old game under there much more than the mods did. The time of Skyrim is over. Time to move on now.

It was time to move on three years ago already! I honestly don’t understand what the fascination with this game is, I played it through twice, not going to do it again…

The NPCs in Fallout 4 also felt very lifeless after you’ve played something like the Witcher.

Oh yeah ofcourse, but I was more talking about NPCs in the sense that NPC mods arent all that great.

Mass Effect will be the only other game that can possibly feel that alive.
Witcher 3 wasnt a perfect game though, ME:A needs to play to those weaknesses to compare.

Skyrim and fallout are much more traditional RPGs, rather than cinematic masterpieces.

      inaccurate.
the remaster looks better than the mods shown.
There are various ENB options, which drastically change the feel of the game
tetrachromatic ENB gives a much more atmospheric look, while Realvision combined with pure waters 2 and a few other mods results in some of the crispest landscape visuals out of any game anywhere.
Not to mention the lighting, weather and fauna overhauls available.

I am aware. My mods folder is as large as the base folder. I’ve been there, done that. Tried almost everything. The remaster by comparison STILL looks better.

But fine. My opinion is inaccurate because reasons. Opinion.

opinions are not all things for everyone, textures from mods are better imo, i agree sharper is not always better, but when you have control over which texture packs and replacers you want to use, i think the mods have one up.

the remaster does do alot right though, especially with that snow and DOF, wow.

at the very least it would make for a great base game for the modders to work with.

If I only had Skyrim on console I would consider it for nostalgia purposes, but on PC, mods address all graphics issues and they add a lot more depth to the game.

Up untill now, i wasnt even aware that the PC version was included in this remaster, lol.
          Totally unnecessary, yeah.
would probably conflict with most of the existing mods anyway.

Although, there is something to be said about having a better base game to work with.
And the recent mods on the nexus have been pretty on point.
should be interesting to see what the mod makers can do with the new game, will withold judgement untill i see results.

You’re all missing one key factor – 64bit. Mods can ALMOST get it up to scratch, but the 3.5GB limitation is now gone. And most mods will work on the remaster. So imagine those mods, adding to a much better base? A base which is already now slightly better than the mods.

The result will blow your mind, guaranteed.

Cash grab? Yet those who own the original and all DLC get it free, no questions asked?

Doesn’t sound like a cash grab to me.

I agree with you, but the cash grab is for console players. PC players who have purchased all the DLC, get a free upgrade, but console players who purchased all the dlc get effall. As a matter of principle, I will not purchase this Skyrim as I have already purchased all of the dlc for the PS3.
