World of Darkness has been cancelled

It feels like World of Darkness, the MMO based on the white wolf’s fictional, gothic universes has been in development for just about ever. Announced in 2006 as part of CCP and White wolf’s merger, it was meant to tie together those universes in one large multiplayer setting, though it seemed to be focused mostly on Vampire: The Requiem with the aim of being “a contemporary vampire simulator.” Doesn’t matter though. 8 years later, and it’s been unceremoniously binned.

The following is CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson’s statement on the game’s cancellation.

The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make. I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I’ve watched the team passionately strive to make that possible.

I would like to give special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the World of Darkness MMO a reality, especially the team members affected by this decision. Their considerable contribution to CCP will not be forgotten, and we wish them well.

To our current and former employees and fans of World of Darkness, I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you.

Although this was a tough decision that affects our friends and family, uniting the company behind the EVE Universe will put us in a stronger position moving forward, and we are more committed than ever to solidify EVE as the biggest gaming universe in the world.

As a result of the cancellation, 56 people at CCP’s Atlanta studio are now unemployed – and it means that CCP is now solely focused on EVE Online. It also cements Vampire: the Masquerade – Bloodlines as the very best digital game set in the World of Darkness for the forseeable future. If they instead did an actual, single player RPG in that vein allowing choices between being Werewolf, Vampire, Mage or Hunter…and I might actually explode.

Here’s a look at some squeaky, leaky footage of the game from all the way back in 2010.

Have you tried The Secret World? May not have vampires IIRC, but any lover of lovecraft will get enjoyment out of it.

Vampire The Masquerade Redemption was a legendary game. I remember needing to upgrade my PC to 64Meg RAM to be able to run it.

I played bloodlines again recently. Great game, but I think I hold more sentimental value to the first Vampire game. Having had the special box with all the goodies and booklets with probably attributed to that.

Nothing beats playing as a Malkavian & trying to figure out which of the 5 conversation options presented means “yes”.

PLAY IT! And like Dark Souls, you MUST get the latest unofficial patch – it adds so much content & fixes a crap load of bugs.

FINALLY! I swear this game has been a bleeding corpse for years… I am a very big World of Darkness fan, but this was obviously not going to make it.

If you want a game like this go and check out The Secret World! Very well done.

I remember being 14 and buying Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines when it came out, and having to wait months desperately saving up to buy a new graphics card for our household Pentium III machine so that I could play it. Blew me away when I finally got it running, I still break it out and replay it every so often. Sigh, they don’t make ’em like they used to.
